People throng at the city fish market on Uruka Day

People thronged at the Ujan Bazar Fish Market in Guwahati, Assam on 13-01-10 early morning, the day of Uruka, a ritual organized during the Magh Bihu Festival. The magh bihu festival is the festival of harvesting, where people harvested their crops and then celebrate the joy with traditional way.

New Television Channel News Network launched

A new television channel named as News Network is going to be launched in the first half of August, 2011. The channel, which will be the eighth electronic media organization in Guwahati will try to cater the need of the entire populace of Assam in addition to thousands of non-resident Assamese families through internet, informed Rana Zaman, the CMD of News Network in a press meet originated in the city. “The channel will focus Assam exclusively and it will be available in the entire State initially through the cable network. Assam scholars participate at International conference held in Bhutan

Five scholars from Assam were invited to participate and present their papers in the 4th International Conference organized by the South and Southeast Asian Association for the Study of Culture and Religion under the auspices of the UNESCO held at Thimphu, Kingdom of Bhutan from June 30-July 03, 2011. 100 injured as Guwahati-Puri Express derails in blast

At least 120 people have been injured when Adivasi Peoples’ Army triggered a powerful blast on the railway tracks in Rangiya that derailed four bogies of the Guwahati-Puri Express on Sunday. The incident took place in between Rangiya and Ghagrapar at around 8 in the evening. A deafening sound rocked the entire area just before the derailment where over 100 passengers have been injured. They have been rushed to the Rangiya hospital. A large crater was created on the tracks because of the the impact of the remote-controlled blast.

Gogoi to table state budget on Monday

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is all set to table the state budget for 2011-2012 on the day one of the budget session on Monday. The ten day long session will also hold debate on the budget on July 14 and 15. Meanwhile, the authorities have beefed up security in and around Dispur to thwart any attempt to create law and order situation during this session. Policemen are building big barricades in and around the Last Gate where the various organizations are set to stage demonstration raising their demands. The authorities have restricted the movements of the city buses through the Last Gate from Monday.

KMSS vows to prevent the prospect of big dams at any cost

RTI activist Akhil Gogoi says they will at any cost prevent the prospect of big dams that would spell ecological disaster in Assam. KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi on Sunday blamed it all on the Gogoi government for the recent Dispur clash that killed three persons including a minor boy on June 22. Addressing a press conference at the Guwahati Press Club on Sunday, Gogoi said that the government is desperately trying to hide the Mitra Panel which blamed the administrative lapses for the clash. Gogoi backs big dames

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday made it plain and simple that he and his government support big dames.
