Assam observes I-Day amid serial bombings

Guwahati: Braving ULFA’s diktat, Assam observes 61st Independance Day amid a string of serial bombings despite a mammoth security arrangement on Wednesday across the state.

Despite an inclement weather, hundreds of people in Guwahati gatecrashed the historic Judges’ Filed to attend the central function in the morning.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi unfurled the national tricolour and inspected the guard of honour in the morning at the Judges’ Field.

In his address, the Chief Minister Mr Gogoi says his Government gets ready to deal with the prevailing law and order situation in the state.

An watertight security arrangement has failed to prevent the ULFA militants from making serial bombings in the time of I-Day in different parts of the state.

According to reports available here, four explosions have rocked the Independence Day celebration albeit there is no report of any casualties.

Two blasts rock Gauripur at 9 in the morning with another explosion in Bongaigaon.

Both were crude bombs and was planted near a pond in Gauripur Sanskrit School and Mahaymay Field . However, no casualty was reported.

Education minister Ripun Bora saves his life by a hair’s breath as an explosion took place in Bongaigaon, minutes after he unfurled the national flag.

The explosion took place at a stone’s throw distance from the Independence Day parade ground. Sources say the bombs were planted beneath the ground.

According to information, police and security forces recover three bombs Niz Kharupetia under Dhola Ps and Keremeri under Mangaldoi Police station in Mangaldoi. These bombs have already been diffused.

Moreover, police further recover a huge cache of arms and ammunitions, explosives during an operation in Sivsagar district. These also include a Japanese radio set, 60 detonators, 5 grenades, 3kgs of RDX, 500 gms of TNT.

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government on Wednesday strikes a significant deal with the State Bank of India to grant home loans for its employees.Speaking to Assam Times, official sources here say the agreement was signed at a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s office by finance secretary Santanu Mukherjee and SBI manager for the north eastern region Atanu Sen in full view of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.According to the pact, the SBI will grant loans to the Assam government employees for building new houses, buying flats, and renovation of old houses at a minimum rate.
