Independence Day in Kuwait

Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).


In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.


I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."


Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. NE Games: dearth of audience worries Manishankar

Union minister for DONER, panchayat, sports and youth welfare Mani Shankar Aiyar has lamented the lack of audience in the North East Games at Sarusajai on Friday while he was visiting the sports complex. During his visit, Mr Aiyer hoped that the north eastern region will produce more and more sports stars. During his visit, the Union minister enjoyed events of the North Easat Games and termed the North East as the birth place of sports stars. He observed that the fund from the Centre to uplift the front has not reached the sports talents. A set of policy should be there to bring the rural boys and girls to the field of sports, he said.

Fire breaks out at Pltanbazar

A devastating fire broke out the Bengali Girls’High School in city’s Pltanbazar area on Thursday in the afternoon. According to information, the authorities have yet to ascertain the cause behind the fire but has initially estimated that it has ravaged property worth one crore. Fire brigade was pressed into service to bring the situation under control. It took 2 hours to douse the fire. Details are awaited.

Congress majority for 15 districts

The ruling party which have majority in altogether 15 districts out of 19 which have gone to panchayat polls. Besides preparing to form zilla parishads in 15 districts, the Congress have majority in block level and gaon panchayats in these districts. The party has swept Darrang, Sonitpur, North Lakhimpur,Sivasagar, Jorhat, Tinsukia,Golaghat, Nagaon,Morogaon, Kamrup metro, Kamrup rural,Karimganj and Dhubri districts. The Asom Gana Parishad too is set to form zila parishads in Dhemaji and Bongaigaon But no single party has emerged to form zila parishads alone in Nalbari and Barpeta. On the other had, counting of votes are at a snail’s pace in Cachar district of Barak valley.

PM announces package for Arunachal Pradesh

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday has said Arunachal Pradesh is in the need of a set of strategies for overall development of the state. Addressing a mammoth gathering at the Indira Gandhi Park during his trip the Prime Minister announced some development projects for the state worth Rs 8000 crores including a new rail link, micro hydro projects and grid based power project to cover all border villages. He announced that the north eastern state will get a new greenfield airport in Itanagar besides airports at Passi Ghat, Along, Daporijo, Ziro and Tizu. Accidental firing jolts Itanagar

An accidental firing rattled Itanagar early in the morning on Tursday. That too before the prime Minister’s maiden visit to the land of rising sun. According to information, a policeman on duty to guard a road through which Prime Minister motorcade was to pass, accidentally fired a bullet injuring a labourer. The injured labourer was being taken to the Guwahati hospital by the Chief Minister's helicopter.The the bullet went off accidentally from the service revolver of an Indian Reserve Battalion constable while he was posted near the Indira Gandhi Park, the venue where the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a public meeting.

Me-dam-me-fi today

Assam observes Me-dam-me-fi on Thursday to offer puja the Ahom ancestors with much religious fervour. Several functions are being organised to mark the occasion across the state. In Guwahati, people are offering pujas to the Ahome ancestors with a series of cultural programmes.

Firing in Itanagar before PM’s visit

Despite a mammoth security arrangement before the Prime Minister’s visit to Itanagar, a shoot out incident has rattled the state capital on Thursday morning. The firing incident that took place early in the morning near the venue for function to be attended by the Prime Minister left one injured who has been rushed to Guwahati by the Chief minister’s helicopter. Top ranked police and civil officials are on the spot to monitor the situation. Investigation is going on.

Manmohan on Arunachal Pradesh visit

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is arriving in Itanagar on a two day visit to Arunachal on Thursday. During his visit, Dr Singh is schedule to lay the cornerstone of a number of major projects. Of this, the major one will be the 3,000 MW Debang Multi Purpose Hydro Electricity Project. According to NHPC officials, it is the largest in the country to be executed by the power giant. Also Dr Singh is schedule to lay the foundation stone of the Harmoti-Itanagar railway line. He will also visit the Ramakrishna Mission Hospital besides formally inaugurating the Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan housing the ruling Congress headquarters and unveil a statue of Indira Gandhi before addressing a public meeting.
