The latest decision of the SEBA (Secondary Education Board of Assam) to make Hindi a compulsory subject for High School Leaving Certificate (Class X) examination would add to the percentage of failure for the Board. It is a torture to make a three-language formula to the already overburdened students. Already the two language structure (Assamese and English) is making things difficult for students in rural areas. How can they afford so many tuitions given that extra classes are a necessary evil to get a grasp of such voluminous curriculum of today!
The reasons cited by SEBA officials is that the move would equop the students of the state with a good skill over Hindi when they move to other places of the country Hindi being the national language. But this is very shortsighted decision. Reasons:
Not all students from the villages and towns of Assam are going to Hindi belt to work. Many would go to the South Indian states. In that case, Tamil, Kanada, Telegu etc should also be made compulsory for the matriculation exam.
What about those students who might land up in Germany or France? Should they appear for these languages for the High School Leaving Certificate Exam? What arrangements will the SEBA make for them?
Hindi is not yet accepted by many pockets of India as the national language. But yes, it has become the language of Entertainment for most parts of India. More than Hindi subject in schools, it is through Bollywood films and songs and TV serials that Hindi has become entertainment language of India. As such, people can get elementary idea and even more by watching these Hindi programmes and listening to songs. There is no point of overburdening our already burdened children with three language formula.
One needn’t be a Prem Chand to carry out daily activities in Hindi. Look at Mamata Banerjee, Pranab Mukherjee, or ministers from South India. They speak a heavily accented Hindi, yet they are holding the power posts in New Delhi.
I would like to request D. Mahanta, the secretary of SEBA and the academicians of the state to think over the matter and keep Hindi as an elective subject as it is till today.

Our children would be Jack of all trades, but master of None.
I vehemently oppose this decision of SEBA.
Those who emmigrate to different parts of the world will learn the required languages at that point of time, when and where required.
Already, the students in Assam are working hard on one non-native language English. And SEBA wants to add more!
Come on, give them a break!

When a piece of bread is thrown before a dog, it jumps and has it.
When a piece of bread is thrown before a lion, it roars and attacks the one who throws the bread.
In this case, the bread is Hindi, which the Central government declared as the 'national' language of India.
Lion-like behaviour is shown by South India while dog-like behaviour is shown by North-East India. It has whatever is thrown at it by the Centre.
Now, the latest organisation from the region to show such dog-like behaviour is the SEBA (Secondary Education Board of Assam). Unlike states like Tamil Nadu, this board of Assam plans to make Hindi a compulsory subject in class X exams.

A 12 hour statewide Assam bandh is disrupting normal life on Tuesday. Barring police army and vehicles, the streets are wearing a deserted look. Shops and other business establishments are also closing. The schools in the morning are also remaining closed. The proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom is calling the statewide Assam bandh demanding immediate release of PCG member and human rights activist Lachit Bordoloi and demanding killing of innocent youths in the name of encounter.
The Centre is all set to start oil exploration in the Brahmaputra river basin saying it could boost oil production. Addressing the golden jubilee function of Oil India Limited (OIL) here on Monday, DONER Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said the basin has huge potential of oil reserve which had to be exploited. He said the exploration work will start as soon as the required environmental clearance was received. According to Aiyar, oil exploration work would also start in Tirap and Changland districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

With much fanfare and cultural extravaganza, the colourful Karbi Youth festival is going on atop the Karbi hills. The colourful cultural event of the Karbi youths was inaugurated by Assam Governor Lt general (retd) Ajoy Singh on Saturday. Assam BJP leadership has come in for sharp criticism following the party’s poor performance in the recent panchayat polls. Several leaders within the party have openly criticized the state unit president Ramen Deka saying he failed to reach the grass root level. With this it has become clear that dissidence against Ramen Daka is resurfacing within the party. The recent panchayat polls have painted a dismal picture for the party where only 1600 have been elected out of more than 8000 candidates the party fielded across the state. The Assam BJP has demanded a specific set of policy from the Government on conversion saying it is mother of all social tension in the state. Addressing a press conference on Sunday in the city, state BJP president Ramen Deka said conversion has been the main reason behind the simmering social tensions in Assam. Saying it inadmissible, Mr Deka added that conversion is still going on in Assam adding that a clear cut policy should have to be there to regulate these. He further said infiltration has already disturbed the state’s demography and it will be more harmful if conversion continues.

A microlite glider of the Indian Air Force nose landed in a tea estate near the IAF eastern aircommand base at Chabua in Dibrugarh district on Saturday at around 10-30. The pilot sustained minor injury in his hand while co-pilot escaped unhurt. The two-seater glider also did not suffer much damage,. Four hardcrore ULFA cadres were killed in Sonari during a joint operation by Army and Sivasagar police on late Friday night. According to information, Army’s 316 Field regiment jawans and the Sivasagar police conducted a massive raid in Naphuk Naharani gaon under Sonari police station and found out these ULFA cadres in a house. These four cadres died on the spot during the operation while the police suspected that two or three more cadres have escaped the operation. Two of these militants have been identified to be Phatik Handique and Ranju Hazarika. The others have yet to be identified.
