A citizens’ meet at Guwahati Press Club on Friday called upon the people of Assam to write letters in the form of an appeal to the Chief Justice, Gauhati High Court to constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to go into the Parag Kumar Das murder and find out the culprit. The meeting, organized by the Journalists’ Forum, Assam (JFA) and presided over by JFA president Rupam Baruah, also requested the letter-writers to appeal to the Chief Justice to consider their letters as public interest litigation. The citizens urged the High Court to monitor the SIT probe, keeping in view the loopholes left by the CBI in its charge-sheet.
In yet another appeal, the well-attended meeting requested the people to hand over to the family of Parag Kumar Das any conclusive or useful proof that could strengthen the case against the accused in a higher court. The meeting was addressed among others by advocates Santanu Bharali, Santanu Barthakur and S. K. Saharia, journalists Hiten Mahanta, Prakash Mahanta, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria, Sabita Lahkar, Anupam Nath and Mukul Kalita and social workers Jayanta Gogoi and Jaharlal Saha.

I just want to ask those people who was involved in the assacination of the great PARAG KUMAR DAS. What was the significant devolopment being happend after that.We are same as earlier what we was even more backward.You killed that person who want to see our Assam in the sky in all point of view so you had killed not only PARAG DA but also Assam's Dreem.No body will excuse you.

I worked with Parag during 1986-87 time frame. He was such a nice gentlemen and I am sure he cannot think of anything negative about any body. Parag was a Patriotic person and for that he paid dearly by his life. By this he attained martyrdom. May his soul rest in peace. The killers should be punished for what they did.

On Magh Sankranti, thousands of people from across the north eastern region rush to the Haigriv temple premises to see this traditional fight of Bulibuli birds. Usually, its preparation began from mid December each year. Those willing to participants in the fight trap the birds from the nearby forest and keep them with care. Noted Karbi folk artiste, researcher, drum exponent, folklorist, playwright and writer Jor Singh Bey has been selected for the Bokul Bon Award for 2008 instituted by Bokul Bon Trust in memory of Assamese literary icon late Ananda Chandra Boruah. According to Bokul Bon Trust President, Samiran Bordoloi, the 52-year-old artiste from Wirwar Denterang village in Karbi Anglong district, has been espousing the cause of Karbi folk arts since 1982. Be wrote a book on the art of playing Karbi drum in 1999. He has also published an anthology of Karbi folk songs and written modern songs, plays, short stories and other articles.
The State Directorate of Cultural Affairs has nominated noted recitationist Pranab Bora and noted violinist Minati Khaund for the Silpi Divas Award this time. The Directorate will celebrate the Silpi Divas Centrally at the Rabindra Bhawan here on January 18. On the occasion, it has also organised competition among the school and college students to test their excellence in singing Jyoti Sangeet and reciting the poems of the Rup Konwar. Sensation still prevails in Umrangso a day after Black Widow militants killing five people including a girl near the Kopili Hydroelectric project. Police and para-military jawans are patrolling in the area but have failed to spot the militants. The militants opened indiscriminate fire outside the power generation project. Assam’s law and order situation still remains volatile with militants killing two security guards at the Umrangsu based Kopili Hydroelectric Project on Monday morning.
