First Assamese Lady to receive Glory of India Award in UK

On 18 July, 2009, Rini Kakati was presented with the prestigious "Glory of India Award" from the India International Society. The "Glory of India Award" ceremony was held at the St. James, Buckingham Gate, London. She is the first Assamese lady to receive this prestigious award.


An international organisation of global repute and influence, it represents the people of India, now nearing one billion living in India and millions more in other countries and Non-Indians of various nationalities, who support India. It espouses humanitarian causes, promotes universal brotherhood and especially works for India's development by campaigning for and mobilising NRI and foreign investment in India.


The award recognises those members of the Indian Diaspora from all around the world, who have etched their own distinct identity - socially, professionally and culturally by the virtue of their own excellence. These individuals have been proactive and instrumental in strenghthening Indo-British ties and encouraging foreign investment in Indian projects and thus contributing to the economic growth of India.


Mrs. Kakati was recognised for her outstanding career and community work, socially, educationally and culturally spanning 35 years, started at the Area 4 Department of Social Services and Community Health in Brent Council. Her academic career started by opening up the Neighbourhood English classes, at Nicole Road Project Centre in Harlesden, also her highly respected and distinguished work in establishing a local nursery for the underprivileged and a drop-in-centre for the women and children at Church Road. In addition, Mrs. Kakati's many community and dedicated works were recognised. She was the first Asian woman Governor at Newfield Junior school. She is multi-lingual and her asset to help the community at large in today's multi-cultural Britain.


On 18 July, 2009, "Glory of India Award" presentation ceremony held in London, were attended by distinguished dignitaries from around the world, including the award presenters invited as guests of honour. Mrs. Kakati was bestowed her award by Mr. M.V. Rajasekharan (Former Union Minister of State for Planning, Govt. of India) the Right Hon'rble: Mr. Marsha Singh, MP ( House of Commons and chief guest), Baroness Sandip Verma (Member of House of Lords) and guest of honour Baroness Prashar of Runnymede (Member of House of Lords)

Four person died, 15 others sustained injury as a bus was falling into a deep gorge in Kokrajhar on Wednesday. According to information, the incident took place at around 1 in the afternoon when the Dhubri bound Bus bearing No AS-16-0714 was falling into a deep gorge near a new RCC bridge at Narabari-Daokibari road under Kokrajhar Police station.Eyewitnesses here say, the bus carried overload passengers and approached the newly constructed bridge while it slipped into mud.Local residents of the area and police rushed to the spot and rushed the injured persons to the Rup Nath Brahma civil hospital in Kokrajhar.
One person died and atleast sixteen others injured when ULFA made powerful blast at Lalganesh area in Guwahati on Tuesday.According to information, the incident took place at around 5-30 in the afternoon near Shankar Hotel and the bomb was planted at a motorcycle which exploded to leave one dead and ten others injured. .Continuing the war of words, Congress has ridiculed the Asom Gana Parishad saying it had sold its regionalism to the BJP. Addressing the reporters, Congress spokesman Himanta Biswa Sarma said after its seat-sharing understanding with BJP, the AGP has surrendered its regionalism to BJP and that during the last assembly poll the AGP manifesto was based on core regionalism. Over 50 rebels alid down thier arms before the Army in upper Assam's Tinsukia district on Tuesday. A day after Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi accused AGP and BJP of fielding chargesheeted candidate in the polls, he has dared both the parties to proof that he received Rs 21 crore from Kolkata tea lobby. He further threatened to file a defamation suit against AGP and BJP.In yet another development, the regional party has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission alleging violation of model code of conduct. The grassroot level AGP workers are not comfortable in the poll alliance with BJP.
