Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

The programme is unique, specially the effort taken to help the girls from terrorist affected families. Congratulations to IGNOU, NEGSA , NEDFI , OIL and other collaborators.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

Commissioner residence catches fire in Jorhat

Properties worth Rs 50 lakh along with some important official documents were reduced to ashes when a devastating fire broke in the office-cum-residence of Upper Assam Commissioner in Jorhat district on Sunday.The fire broke out in the residence of the first floor of the bungalow of Iftikar Hussain at Cinamora following a shortcircuit at around 12:15 pm and soon spread to the ground floor where the office was located. Explosives for sale! 2 arrested in Nalbari

Police arrested two youths in Tamulpur on Saturday when they were carrying explosive to Kokrajhar.In a sensational revelation, the duo known to be from an insurgent outfit, procured grenades from an army jawan in Darrangimela. D voter commits suicide in Cachar

A local resident along the Indo-Bangla border is understood to have committed suicide after he was declared a doubtful voter. He was not given the form for voter photo identity card in Cachar district.He was identified as Arjun Namasudra, a 32-year old resident of Indo-Bangla border village Haritikar part-I who hanged himself on Friday after a case was filed against him in the Foreigners' Tribunal alleging that he was a doubtful citizen.Namasudra's wife, Basana claimed that he had got the notice twice from the Tribunal but could not appear as he was a poor daily wage worker and had no money to pay the lawyers.

Assam pins hopes on Myanmar help

Assam has welcomed the recent assurance of Myanmar government to flush out North East-based militant groups camping in the neighbouring country.Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in Dispur on Saturday that the Myanmar government has assured Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that no shelter would be provided to the militant groups mongering trouble in the north east.He, however, said that there was no formal communication received so far by his office from the Centre.

Assam CM assures security to NHPC

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that the government was fully prepared to ensure safe passage of al’l materials to the NHPC-owned big dam site in Gerukamukh. Talking to reporters in Guwahati he said that NHPC workers engaged in the construction of Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric project (LSHP) would get full security.He, further, said that an expert committee will be formed soon to study its downstream impact. Work on the project has come to a halt since December following vehement protests by anti-dam agitators and NHPC Executive Director Rakesh has urged Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments to provide security.

2 militants held from Indo-Bhutan border

Security forces arrested two militants along the Indo-Bhutan border in lower Assam on Saturday.The duo were held during a joint operation the Sashastra Seema Bal SSB and police from Kumarikata area near the Indo-Bhutan border.Both they a residents of Tamarhat in neighbouring north Bengal belong to little known Santhal National Liberation.

Dispur concentrates on small industries

The failure to beckon mega big ticket investment on industrial front has forced the Assam government to think of the small and cottage industries.Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Saturday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that he took up the matter with the Planning Commission on his recent visit to Delhi where he argued that there was no dearth of small units giving employment opportunity in village areas.According to him, transport subsidy was available for the big industry for transportation of raw material and finished products to Northeast. H said that the same is not available to small industry located in interior areas.

Harassment: House panel lauds Assam

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice on Friday said that Assam’s overall performance on Supreme Court guidelines to prevent harassment of women at the workplace is very impressive. ONGC hits pot of gold in Golaghat

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has claimed to have discovered a new oil well in the in Golaghat district. The oil giant said that the new well has been spotted in Chalukpather area in the district bordering Nagaland. Public sector energy giant ONGC has started drilling oil along the inter-state border between Assam and Nagaland in both Jorhat and Golaghat districts. ONGC officials said that the Navaratna company would be paying royalty to Assam for its work along the border. The oil major has 42 oil wells in both Jorhat and Golaghat district which fall under the Jorhat sector of the company.
