Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

The programme is unique, specially the effort taken to help the girls from terrorist affected families. Congratulations to IGNOU, NEGSA , NEDFI , OIL and other collaborators.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

IIT-Guwahati Director in the line of fire

IIT-Guwahati Director Gautam Barua draws flak from IITs’ faculties on Tuesday for supporting Kapil Sibal who has proposed 'one-nation one-test' for entry into them and other institutes.All India IIT Faculty Federation in a statement called the move a shocked and pained. M’laya stresses political consensus on border row

Meghalaya on Tuesday reiterated political consensus to settle the simmering interstater border row with Assam.Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that the need was build a consensus among all political parties to solve the inter-state border dispute with Assam. He urged the agitating elected representatives and the individuals to re-strategise their approach as they put pressure on the government to solve the dispute. Centre not ready to release Daimary

The Centre on Tuesday virtually ruled out immediate release of Ranjan Daimary to expedite the peace process with NDFB. The message surfaced when a delegation of the Bodo National Conference delegation met home ministry joint secretary Shambhu Sigh in New Delhi demanding release of the NDFB chairman to expedite peace process. But the Centre denied immediate release of the leader saying that efforts are to break the logjam. Talking to reporters, the BNC spokesman Khampa Borgoyari said that the meeting with the home ministry official was very comprehensive and productive and they were hopeful for release of Daimary.

Gogoi launches scheme for women welfare

The Assam government on Tuesday launched an ambitious scheme which targets to achieve 16 goals for women and child welfare by 2016, including reducing the infant and maternal mortality rates, improving sex ratio and improving enrolment of the girl child in the state. Nalbari: Protestor dies of cardiac arrest

Sensational prevails in Nalbari following the death of a protestor when he was participating at a dharna in front of the municipality office here on Tuesday. The 47 year-old suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to the civil hospital where he died. The incident took place when over 300 demonstrators had gathered to protest against failure of the district administration to take any steps to prevent the problem of water-logging in the town.

One killed, 8 injured in lightning

A child died and eight others have been seriously injured when lightning struck two villages in Kamrup (Rural) district on Tuesday. The incident took in the evening when thunderstorms and lightning struck Western and Eastern Hatigaon villages. The 12 year-old child was identified and the injured were admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital where their condition was stated to be critical.

Women in local bodies in Assam might have 50% reservation

The Assam government is in a move to increase reservation for women in local bodies to 50 per cent of the total seats. If it so happens, it would mark a rise from the current 33 per cent. According to Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Rockybul Hussain, the government is seriously considering 50 per cent reservation in seats to women in the panchayat and local municipal bodies. But he did not mention any timeframe for bringing a legislation to increase the number of reserved seats. AASU-AUS dharna in front of HPC mill

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and Asom Unnati Samaj activists staged a day-long dharna in front of Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited at Jagiroad on Tuesday demanding the repeal of the allotted lease of bamboo supply to a private individual. The protesters further demand cancellation of transfer order of the paper mill's Chief Executive P K Bhuyan.
