Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

The programme is unique, specially the effort taken to help the girls from terrorist affected families. Congratulations to IGNOU, NEGSA , NEDFI , OIL and other collaborators.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

Rhino poaching continues in Pobitora

Despite the ravaging flood waves, poachers in the Kaziranga National Park along with other sanctuaries are still striking. Most of the animals in the sanctuary have fled to higher grounds to get rid of watery grave. An adult male rhino was killed by poachers inside the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district on Wednesday night. The poachers, who are believed to have come on a boat killed the rhino and managed to flee with the horn. The carcass was spotted on Thursday. Flood water since past one week and most of the animals in the sanctuary have fled to higher grounds.

Tearful farewell to lifeless Hiren Bhatta

People thronged in thousands at the Navagraha cremation ground on Thursday morning to get the last glimpse of famed poet Hiren Bhatta who breathed his last on Wednesday. His body was taken away from Snehtirtha at a procession of thousands of people. As soon as the body was placed at his residence, his fans cutting barriers of caste and creeds paid their last respect to the poet. Carcasses floating on receding waters at KNP

Devastating flood waters continue to show receding trend. But the blues of the displaced birds and animals in the Kaziranga National Park and other sanctuaries are still surging. Carcasses are spotted floating in the famed national Kazirnga National park, Manah and Pobitora sanctuaries.The carcass of a full grown female rhino was found in the Agortoli range on Wednesday. Flood brings landslide on NH 52

Continuing landslide in Dhemaji heavily disrupts surface communication between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday. A vital portion of the National Highway 52 eroded rapidly in Behbeli area from Wednesday night after around 20 villages came under the surging waters. The situation took a grim turn after the surging waters of the Ziadhal, Kumotia rivers washed away a culvert in between Murkokcheleng and Rongia railway lines. Thousands of vehicles on the national highway 52 remained stranded because of this landslide.

Barak valley burning in protest

Barak valley is still burning with violent protest even a week after the mob attack on MLA Rumi Nath. There are reports of violence in Kallain town in Cachar district forcing the district administration to impose under indefinite curfew after members of two communities clashed leaving 22 persons injured on Wednesday.Policemen deployed to rein in the situation used water canons to disperse the clashing groups during a 12-hour Barak Valley bandh following which the indefinite curfew was imposed.Reports of clashes are also coming from Nilambazaar in Karimganj district leaving three persons injured.Altogether 330 persons were arrested in Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.The bandh was...

Bard of sunshine dazzles in death

Famed Assamese poet Hiren Bhatta is no more. He passed away on Wednesday at Dispur Hospital where he was admitted last month following lungs infection. The end came at 11-30 in the morning in presence of his wife and daughter. Hiru-da penned at least 11 collections of poetry. Many of these poems turned into songs by Assamese singers. His famed Sugandhi Pokhila has been translated into English.
