School children plant medicinal plants

The students of Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School planted hundreds of medicinal plants at Kalaigaon on May 16 at 10 am.More than hundred of ‘Mahaneem,Silikha and Amlakhis’ were planted at the premises of Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School,Kalaigaon. Students,under the guidance of teachers not only planted the saplings; but also vowed to take good care of them. Fencings were too provided to the plants by the students in order to protect them. The most encouraging aspect of the programme was ,groups consisting with one senior and one junior student in each groups planted the medicinal saplings, so that the saplings would be protected even after the departure of the senior student from the school.

According to B.N.Dey, headmaster of Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School,the plantations had been done under ‘National Awareness Campaign 2008-09,Ministry of Environment and Forest,Government of India, in collaboration with Assam Science Society,Guwahati.The headmaster also said that the project titled,’Plantation of Local Medicinal Plants’ aimed to create an awareness among students and children to plant more and more trees to check pollution and global warming. Another objective was to tell the students about the usefulness of local medicinal plants of Assam as well as NE.

A quiz competition on nature and wildlife was also arranged on the occasion immediately after the plantation programme..The quiz was conducted by Phatik Deka and Abhijit Topadar both teachers of the school. Students of the school also performed cultural items on the occasion under the guidance of Radio and TV artist Renu Saikia.It is to be mentioned that Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School had arranged a workshop cum plantation programme at Pachim Silpota High School,10 km from Kalaigaon on May,3 2008 in order to create awareness among students and village people for the conservation nature and wildlife.

Newly weds commit suicide

In a tragic incident one Dipankar Nath (22) and his newly wed wife Durga Deka Nath (19), son and daughter-in-law of Bolo Ram Nath of village No.2 Kalaigaon, under Kalaigaon police station committed suicide togather on April 21 at 6-30 PM. The couple was married on March 14,this year only. The bodies of the couple were seen hanging from the ceiling of their living room in embracing position. The cause of the tragic incident is yet to know,but it has created sensation in the area. The dead bodies have already been sent to Udalguri Civil Hospital for post mortem.

Wild tuskar found dead near Bornadi WLS

A full grown wild tuskar has been found dead at Neewly PRF to the south of Samrang close to Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary in Udalguri district today morning. It is suspected to be killed by people as the dead body of the tuskar bore several injury marks. The injured tuskar was seen last week at Khorani area near Samrang forest. According to nature loving people it could have been saved had it been treated last week. So far 23 wild elephants had been dead in Udalguri district alone in just two years causing serious concern.

Awareness cum health camp near Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary

In an attempt to mitiggate man elephant conflict in Udalguri district, Dhansiri Forest Division in association with NRHM and district veterinary department organised a massive wildlife awareness cum health (both man and animal) camp at Saharia Chowk near Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary on April 11.The programme was held at Swahid Adarsha ME School. Lady brutally beheaded in Udalguri district

Another lady has again been brutally killed in the name of “Witch hunting” in Udalguri district. One Lakhi Hemrang(40) wife of Bhode Hemrang of the village Baghar Chuburi (12 KM from Kalaigaon) had been brutally be-headed at around 7-30 PM on March 28. According to information, five villagers armed with dao and khukri forcibly entered the house of the lady while her husband was away. They dragged her to a nearby field and be-headed her mercilessly. Tragic death of a lady at Kalaigaon

Sharmila Sangma (37) wife of Jonny Sangma of Boragaon (Lokhora) Guwahati met her tragic end in a bike accident at Bholabari near Kalaigaon (Udalguri district)on 24 March at 11 AM. She had been pillion riding a Pulser bike No.AS-01/AX 6646 from Guwahati to Tangla. The accident occurred when a school student suddenly tried to cross the MB road at Bholabari in front of the speedy bike. She died on the spot while the rider Bijoy Sangma escaped with minor injury.

Udalguri DC resents non utilisation of students funds

Rupalim Choudhury of Assam has topped in the B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) from Visvesvaraya Technical University,Belgaum Karnataka,securing gold medal.She is the only daughter of Mukunda Ram Choudhury (MLA,Kalaigaon LAC) and Mriduli Choudhury and grand daughter of late Hemkanta Choudhury,noted social worker of Choudhurypara village of Kalaigaon. Traditional hunting poses serious threat to ecology in Udalguri district

Traditional hunting of small wild animals,birds,rodents,amphibians has posed a serious threat to ecology of the state. Such traditional hunting by groups of villagers belonging to a few community has now been considered to be a biggest threat ecology of the state.
