The death toll in the Latubam tea estate’s hooch tragedy has reached nine on Monday a day after 8 died after consuming spurious country liquor. This has forced the Dibrugarh district administration to order a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
Sources told Assam Times, six persons, including a woman, died in a hospital and three others were brought dead. Two persons were referred to Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh in critical condition. The deceased were Buluet Bhomij (35) and Laxman Bhomij (14) and Sutu Kharia (50) Sukuru Kharia (54), Jeka Kharia (25), Tulsi Kharia (20), Lakhiram Bhomij (35), Montu Bhomij (17) Vishnu Ghatowar (35).
According to information, patients started pouring into the hospital from around 8 on Sunday night. These were, mostly, found unconscious. After consuming some of them started vomiting and complained of headache, respiratory disorder and stomach ache. They consumed these spurious liquor as they were attending a community feast at Latubam Lane in the Tingkhong Tea Estate area. Meanwhile, an officer in the rank of the additional deputy commissioner would probe into the incident.
