The Asom gana parishad leaders are holding a steering body meeting on Thursday to finalise the fate of the prestigious Guwahati Lok Sabha seat. According to the senior party leaders, they would have to take a decision on the seat and contradicted the report that they have already handed over the Guwahati seat to the BJP. A section of senior BJP leaders have said the deal has already been finalised and that they have been allowed to field their candidates.
In yet another development, the third front comprising AUDF, NCP, CPI and CPM have finalised the poll deals in altogether 8 seats. The meeting on Wednesday evening has cleared 4 seats for AUDF and 2 each for CPI and NCP. The deals for the remaining 6 seats would be taken soon. The idea to form a third front was necessitated after the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) decided to align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the parliamentary elections in Assam. Prior to the AGP-BJP pre-poll tie up, there were talks going on for a grand alliance of all non-Congress and non-BJP formations in Assam.
