Shameful arrest: Assam education minister Ripun Bora was arrested by CBI in Delhi on June 3 while he was trying to bribe one of its officials who was probing into the sensational Danial Topno murder case.

The Second Coming: The breakaway group of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) along with PLP united to bolster the regional politics. Both the AGP factions reunited on October 4 at the regional party’s general convention at Golaghat.

Farewell to arms: The cadres of A and C companies of ULFA’s crack unit ie 28th battalion announced an unilateral ceasefire on June 24 citing their aim at ensuring talk between ULFA and government.

String of clash: At least 55 people were killed more than two lakh people rendered homeless at the height of a communal riot that rocked Udalguri and Darrang districts of lower Assam during the first week of October.

First time first chance: Kalpana Chaudhury of Assam wowed the Asian countries striking gold at the first ever Asian Women Boxing Championship in Guwahati kickstarted on September 24.

Shocking blast: At least 84 people were killed more than 200 have been injured when a series of blast rocked Guwahati, Bongaigaon, Barpeta Road and Kokrajhar.

Violence atop the hills: At least 35 people were killed by DHD(J) outfit in a string of attack in North Cachar hills district in the first week of June.

Pride of Assam: Sahitya Akedemy Award to Dr Rita Chaudhury and Vidyasagar Narzary in the third week of December.

Acknowledgment: Dada saheb phalke awardee Dr Bhupen Hazarika awarded the firs ever Assam Ratna award by the Assam government.

End of an era: Noted singer and cultural icon Dilip Sarma passed away in the first week of October.

Culling in progress in Dhubri and Kokrajhar

For the second day, the rapid response team are carrying out poultry culling in some parts of Kokrajhar and Dhubri district. The culling is going on in an area of 5 kilometer having as many as 90,000 poultry. Officials here say these will be culled as per the instructions from the Centre. The areas falling in this 5 kilometer area are Kochugaon block in Kokrajhar district, Agomoni block in Dhubri district. A brimful cup of misery awaits the tea garden labourers working at the Dumor Dalong Tea Estate where lock out has entered eight day on Monday. The deadlock came up following the clash among a section of Congress workers for panchayat poll ticket. Assam Annual Plan outlay fixed at Rs 5011

From Babul Gogoi, New DelhiAssam will get Rs 5011 crore for the year 2008-09. It was finalized here on Monday at a meeting between Planning Commission, Deputy Chairman Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Kumar Gogoi.According to official confirmation, the Annual Plan size has been agreed at Rs.5011 crores. This includes special plan assistance of Rs.250 crores for identified projects of the State, of this, Rs.20 crores will be earmarked for development of Majuli Island. AASAA leader received cash from ANLA

It’s a big revelation that the Adivasi militants outfit ANLA funded the AASAA to hold the rally that turn violent in the city’s Beltola area on November 24. The startling revelation came up before the Justice Manisana Singh while the arrested AASAA vice president Rafel Kujur deposed before it recently. According to the Kujur received Rs 20,000 in cash at a Paltanbazar hotel in the evening on November 23. The amount was paid to hold the rally. Notably, the police arrested Kujur alleging nexus with the ANLA. The entire probe is taking a new turn with this revelation. There is no doubt about it.

Black Widow terror: 2 killed, 3 injured in NC Hills

Tension still prevails in Manderdisa a day after the death of people when Black Widow tribal militants opened indiscriminate fire in the North Cachar village. Three people have been left injured in the strike. The militants set ablaze five houses in the incident. According to information, the militants arrived in the village and woke up villagers who were sleeping and started firing; killing two persons and leaving three injured. The militants further later set on fire five houses. The deceased were were all Adivasi daily wage workers.The reason for the killings was not immediately known.

King Weds Mirani

Aman King is the younger son of Omar Luther King and Roma King. He is incidentally the grandson of Maulana M. Tayyebulla who was a Minister in the Bardoloi Cabinet in the late forties and early fifties and was thereafter unanimously elected (unopposed) to the Upper House of Indian Parliament for two terms (12 years). Aman, a software developer, used to work for a product engineering company in Delhi called GlobalLogic, and is now working for another company called ThoughtWorks in Pune. The King (Junior) claimed his Queen, Arpita (nee Mirani) on January 12, 2008 and the two became one. Aman’s better-half holds a high executive post in Satyam at Pune.

Brindabon hints at strategies for LS polls

The Asom Gana Parishad will formulate a set of strategies fore the Lok Sabha polls in the light of the panchayat poll results. Disclosing this at a press conference at the party headquarters, Mr Goswami said the result was encouraging and it will help the party ensure victory in the Lok Sabha polls. He maintained that despite rigging the ruling party could not to show expected performance. The president further alleged that the ruling party with the help of a section of vote counting officials ensured the defeat of AGP candidate.
