Rajya Sabha MP Rwngwra Narzary has strongly reacted to the violence that claimed the lives of two civilians in the Kheroni and Donkamokam areas of West Karbi Anglong district on December 22. The incident, which occurred under the Sixth Schedule Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), has drawn widespread condemnation cutting across communities in Assam.
Expressing serious concern over the developments, Narzary termed the incident unfortunate and condemnable, particularly as it originated from what he described as a peaceful and democratic movement.
According to the MP, the violence erupted in the aftermath of a peaceful protest and hunger strike demanding the eviction of people allegedly occupying Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) land illegally in the Kheroni area. He said that while democratic protests are a legitimate means to raise issues, the subsequent turn towards violence was deeply regrettable.
Narzary also strongly condemned the use of derogatory and provocative slogans such as “Chinese” and “Go back” directed at the indigenous Karbi tribal community. He stated that such remarks are unacceptable and only serve to deepen social divisions and tensions. He emphasized that indigenous tribal communities have historically lived peacefully, safeguarding their land, identity, and rights without troubling others.
Highlighting the constitutional framework, the MP said that the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India was specifically incorporated to protect the land, identity, and interests of tribal communities in autonomous regions. Any attempt to undermine the spirit of the Sixth Schedule or create unrest in such areas, he said, runs contrary to the constitutional vision of inclusive development and social harmony.
Narzary further noted that India, including Assam, is progressing on the path of development and transformation. In this context, Sixth Schedule areas must also advance while ensuring justice, peace, and protection for indigenous communities. Acts of violence and unrest, he added, do not benefit any section of society and only impede development.
Appealing for calm, the MP urged all sections involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions or statements that could further inflame the situation. Through the media, he called upon all parties to engage in constructive dialogue with the government to resolve the issue amicably.
Calling for peace and unity, Narzary expressed hope that normalcy would return to West Karbi Anglong soon and that all stakeholders would work together to uphold constitutional values, communal harmony, and the rights of indigenous people.
