On the auspicious occasion of the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the Assam government has handed over the legendary singer’s neglected residence at Kuthori, Kaziranga, to local residents for preservation.
For the past five years, the house—once vibrant with the maestro’s harmonium, tabla, and compositions—had fallen into disrepair, leaving fans and admirers disheartened. Although the government had acquired the property at a cost of ₹2.51 crore from Fatik Nyog five years ago, no concrete conservation efforts had been initiated since.
Responding to repeated demands from villagers, the government announced today that the residence will be developed into a cultural project. The initiative aims to safeguard Bhupenda’s memories while also attracting scholars and tourists from India and abroad.
Expressing joy over the decision, long-time caretaker Haren Neog, who has been associated with the house since 1974, said, “Today is a day of victory for the people of Assam. After years of struggle, the government has finally recognized and preserved this invaluable memory of Sudhakantha. Now students, admirers, and future generations will have a place to remember him.”
Once developed, the “Bhupen Awas” at Kuthori will not only serve as a memorial but also emerge as a hub of Assam’s cultural tourism—reviving the music, philosophy, and legacy of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika for posterity.
