Baokhungri Festival 2025 Kicks Off at Baokhungri Hill in Kokrajhar

The 12th edition of the Baokhungri Festival began on Saturday with vibrant celebrations at Baokhungri Hill in Kokrajhar district, drawing a large gathering of visitors and devotees. The three-day event is being organized by the Tourism Department of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

Held annually on the eve of the Bodo New Year—marking the last day of the Choitra month—the festival ushers in the Baisak month, celebrated as Rongjali Bwisagu or Rongali Bihu, with cultural fervor and spiritual significance.

The event was inaugurated by Dharma Narayan Das, Executive Member of the BTC, who opened the main festival entrance, marking the start of a rich cultural showcase.

One of the most sacred elements of the festival is the Baokhungri Hill trek, scheduled for April 14, during Sankranti. Thousands of devotees are expected to climb the hill to offer prayers to Lord Bwrai Bathou, seeking blessings for good health and the fulfillment of wishes.

Throughout the festival, traditional Bodo sports such as Khomlainai (Bodo wrestling), Ghila Gelenai, Dongfang Bukhunai, and Daobo Athing are being held, alongside cycling races and indigenous games that highlight the community’s athletic spirit.

The venue features numerous food stalls offering traditional Bodo delicacies, while cultural performances from various ethnic groups enrich the celebration, reflecting the cultural diversity and harmony of the Bodoland region.

Prominent dignitaries present on the opening day included BTC Executive Members Dabaisa Boro, Ranjit Basumatary, and Dhanajay Basumatary, along with Member of Parliament Rwngwra Narzary and MLA Lawrence Islary.

Beyond cultural celebration, the Baokhungri Festival serves as a platform to preserve indigenous traditions, promote community unity, and boost tourism in the region. Local citizens and organizing committee members are working diligently to ensure the event's smooth execution and grand success.

3 held, Ganja recovered in Kokrajhar

Hagrama Mohilary, BPF chief, released on bail

BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary was granted bail on Saturday and released against case CR 34/2020, accused of section 120-B/500 IPC from CJM court in Kokrajhar. Pramod Boro, the president of the United People’s Party of Luwahati, filed a complaint against  Mohilary, the former chief of Bodoland Territorial Council, at the court of CJM Kokrajhar for making derogatory remarks about him in February 2020. The bail was granted by Kokrajhar's chief judicial magistrate.    

Cycle Rally to Create Awareness on Elimination of Tuberculosis

A cyclothon for TB mukt Bharat awareness programme was held in Kokrajhar today to create awareness about the disease among the society. Road mishap kill 2 in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: Two people were killed on the spot in a late-night road accident in Balajan Pakriguri under Kokrajhar police station. According to police, two people were travelling on a bike and met with mishaps that claimed two people on the spot at a roadside parking dumper in Pakriguri along JD Road late at night around 2.15 am on Tuesday night under Kokrajhar police station. Badminton Championship Concludes

Kokrajhar: The first ever edition of the All Assam Prize Money Non-Ranking Badminton Championship-2021 concluded on Tuesday after a two-day programme was scheduled to be held at the indoor stadium of the Kokrajhar District Sports Association (KDSA) in Kokrajhar district. Lightning kills 3 in Chirang

At least three persons died and several others received injuries due to the lightning struck at Anthaibari under Bengtol police outpost in Chirang district on Wednesday afternoon. According to the source, three persons have died and several other people from Anthaibari area received serious injuries due to heavy lightning this afternoon while people were watching a football match at Anthaibari playground. The injured persons were immediately rushed to the Bengtol missionary hospital where three persons were declared brought dead. TB awareness programme held in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: For increasing the awareness about TB among pregnant mothers and adolescent girls in a meeting, Jon Andalon addressed the citizens and local health workers at Beswargaon and Guwabari Health Centres in Kokrajhar district on Wednesday. Kokrajhar Planetarium and Science Centre has been disconnected from electricity supply due to non payment of bills

Electricity to the Kokrajhar Planetarium and Science center was cut off because there's an outstanding bill of 1.83 lakh. Due to power cutoff, the Kokrajhar Planetarium and Science centre is currently not functional.
