In a critical rescue operation, the Indian Army, along with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have mobilized to save laborers trapped in a flooded coal mine in Umrangsu, Karbi Anglong district of Assam. The incident, which occurred due to a devastating flood on Sunday, has left a group of laborers stranded underground with no communication established yet.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that a specialized team of Navy deep divers has been called upon to aid in the rescue mission. The divers, who are en route from Vishakhapatnam, are expected to reach the site soon to tackle the challenging conditions inside the mine, where water levels have surged to nearly 100 feet, complicating rescue efforts.
The state government acted swiftly, launching rescue operations immediately following the incident. In a recent update on social media, CM Sarma detailed the ongoing efforts, stating, "Navy deep divers have been requisitioned to assist in the rescue operation. The water level inside the mine has risen to nearly 100 feet, according to the assessment by the stationed team. The divers are flying in from Visakhapatnam and are expected to arrive soon."
The operation underscores the gravity of the situation, with multiple agencies pooling their resources to ensure the safe extraction of the trapped workers. The focus remains on establishing contact and providing any necessary aid to the miners while awaiting the arrival of the Navy divers for more specialized assistance in the underwater conditions.
This incident highlights the risks associated with mining operations, especially in regions prone to natural disasters, and the importance of robust safety measures and rapid response capabilities in such emergencies.
