India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Salt scarcity!

All of a sudden, people across the started buyins salt on Thursday. A section of businessmen picked up the first buck and started selling the essential commodity @ 200 per kg. Some others stocked salts to claim more rate. Within a few hours salt vanished from the shops and markets in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar and Jorhat. The panic buying started acting on a rumour that Gujrat has stopped supplying salts to Assam. A television news channel aired the story of how salts are available for Rs 200 per kg. But the story was withdrawn later. The government called it a rumour and asked the people not be panic further.

Youth kills grandmother

A 75 year old woman was strangulated to death in Guwahati on Thursday night sending shockwaver across the state. The incident took place near the Kamakhya temple where Ratul Athpuria killed his grandmother as she refused to give him money. Ratul strangulated his grandmother Kunjalata to death and managed to flee. Police registered a case and investigation is going on.

Bizzare incident in book fair

In yet another incident that touches off seismic waves of protest and anger across the state, the temporary statue of Laxminath Bezbarua was romoved on Thursday. The statue, installed as a mark of respect for the doyen of Assamese literature was suddenly removed just before chief minister Tarun Gogoi arrived the book fair to attend a function in the evening. The statue was reinstalled following sharp reaction and protest. Later the chief minister said that the statue should not have been removed for security reasons. The organizers said that they did it only at the instance of the chief minister's security officials.

Assam joins Childrens day

Assam observed childrens day along with other parts of the country to mark the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi participated at the centrally sponsored function at the Sankardev Kalakhetra in the morning. He promptly responded the questions posed by the participating children. Apart from this the day was observed with a daylong programme of songs and dances along with drawing competition acrosr the state.

Rabha Hasong poll peaceful

Despite stiff protest even in the form of week-long bandh, high turn out was recorded in the first phase polling for Rabha Hasong autonomous body in parts of Kamrup and Goalpara districts on Wednesday. Polling began at 7 in the morning in 6 constituency in Kamrup along with 7 constituencies in Goalpara districts where voters were seen in lonp queue till 3 in the afternoon. The polling passed off peacefully as the non Rabha organizations has reduced the 14 days bandh. The second phase of polling is slated for Saturday.

Lifer for 5 in rape-murder case

In yet another landmark judgment, Gauhati High Court on Tuesday ordered lifer for five tea garden officials in Jorhat district in connection with a rape and murder case. A division bench of the court on Tuesday rejected the Jorhat session court where the alleged perpetrators were acquitted citing lack of evidence. The court asked the authorities to send the accused to the jail immediately. Controversy over Agarwal's rescue

The rescue of AK Agarwal mires in controversy a day after Sonitpur police claimed to have done it following an encounter inside a dense jungle. Sonitpur SP Arabinda Kalita claimed the credit. But NDFB's Songbijit faction claimed to have released only acting on the request of Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki. NHPC GM rescued

Sonitpur police have rescued Anil Kumar Agrawal 51 day after the Songbijit faction of NDFB kidnapped the NHPC general manager from Bhalukpung area at gunpoint. Sources told assamtimes that the dramatic rescue took place during a fierce encounter on Monday night at a dense jungle along the Assam Arunachal Pradesh border. The encounter took place when a five member Police team led by SP Arabina Kalita and ASP Shiladitya Chetia was carrying out an operation in the area to be attacked by the militants with grenade explosion. A brief respite for Central Bureau of Investigation. The Supreme Court on Saturday stayed the gauhati High Court  order saying that the investigation agency now at work was unconstitutional.Taking up the petition moved by the Centre on behalf of the CBI, the apex court stayed the order and fixed December 6 as the next date off hearing.The centre on Saturday moved the apex court challenging the court order in view of over 9000 pending cases before the investigation agency.
