India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Ravaging inferno in Guwahati

Miscreants disrupt Puja in Baksa

In yet another incident that can brew an orgy of group clash, unidentified miscreants vandalized idols of the goddess Kali in a few temples and puja pandals in Baksa district on Monday. Huge compensation for Gendamari victims

The Assam government on Monday has announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs 6 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured Gendamari. Six killed on the spot while another succumbed to injuries on the way to the GMCH. Nine other people have been undergoing treatment at the GMCH. The district has embroiled in violence since October 20 after Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections declared scheduled to be held in between November 13 and 25. The Non Rabhas demand exclusion of non Rabha areas from the Council.

Night curfew at Gendamari

A gory incident that left 7 people in Goalpara district bordering Meghalaya has forced the authority to clamp night curfew on Monday. Army and police are on patrolling duty at Gendamari area where suspected GNLA militants shot dead seven persons at a dewali function on Sunday night.The night curfew is in force from 7 in the evening to 6 in the morning. National Highway 62 between Damra in Assam and Dalu in Meghalaya as well as NH 51 between Paikan and Dalu along with Khargang-Resubelpara road are not under the purview of the curfew.

Twin murder rocks Jorabat

Two more youths were found dead at Jorabat in the outskirt of Guwahati on Monday.           The semi-naked bodies were recovered from a culvert in the morning.     Both the bodies bore some injury marks in the heads. Police investigation are going on.

Youth killed in Guwahati

Amid dewali pomp and gaiety, a youth was beaten to death in Guwahati on Sunday night.    Identified as Pankaj Pathak, the youth was attacked by unidentified miscreants, probably followed by a road mishap at night.               Pathak's body was found beside a temple in the morning. His bike was also found near the body.

GNLA mayhem: 7 killed

Once again militants seem to have spread terror tentacles in Goalpara district bordering Meghalaya.        In a fresh orgy of attack, the Garo militants shot dead 6 people at Gendpara village on Sunday night. Over 15 others have been injured in the attack.              Eyewitness told an Assam Times crew that a group of 6 gunmen reached the village when the local residents were celebrating diwali by lighting lamps and bursting crackers.          Immediately after reaching the spot, they started indiscriminate firing at the crowd leaving 6 people died on the spot.       Then the militants...

No breakthrough in Chirang abduction

Tension prevails in Chirang a day after unidentified miscreants kidnapped 4 persons of a family at gunpoint.           The incident took place at North Khaitema village on Saturday wee hours when gunmen  took away Tarun Basumatary, his wife and two sons at gunpoint.           Two other childrens, however managed to escape from the scene.        Search operation is in progress. But there seems to be hardly any breakthrough.
