India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Dam equipment hits roadblock

Amid massive security, a huge trailer is believed to have been carrying vital equipment for big dams in Arunachal Pradesh.The trailer managed to crossed Guwahati on Monday night and is set to reach Tezpur on Tuesday afternoon triggering protest in Nagaon.  KMSS activists, which has been dead opposed to the dams in Gerukamukh are trying to resist the move by holding road blockade in some places on the National Highway 37.

Suspected NDFB-S militants shot at a local businessman in Kokrajhar district on Monday.According to information, identified as Babu Ali, the local businessman in Kajigaon was shot at by three motorcycle armed youths in the evening on his way back to home.Police rushed to the spot. But by then, the militants managed to flee from the spot. The injured businessman was rushed to the hospital.

Electronic eyes in Kaziranga

Beware rhino poachers. Poachers’ movement could be dangerous in Kaziranga National park. The world heritage site is fitted with electronic eyes to monitor the movement of rhino poachers.Forest minister Rockybul Hussian laid the foundation stone of the project at a function in Kaziranga on Monday.Initially, Kaziranga will get 8 such towers to scan the movement of poachers. More towers are in the pipeline. Notably, poachers have killed 6 rhinos during the last two months alone.

Biker crushed to death

A section of city buses seem to have turned into street killer.A speeding city bus crushed to death a biker in Guwahati on Monday sending shock and anger in the city.The incident took place at Survey area in Beltola in the afternoon when the city bus rammed into the bike leaving the biker on the spot.The deceased was identified as Ranjit Kumar. Eyewitness told Assam Times that it is simply because of the speeding bus. A case has been registered in Dispur police station.

More death in ULFA camp

Yet another death seems to have rattled ULFA camp these days.This time the deceased is Tenzing Asom, the eastern commander of the banned insurgent outfit who died of cerebral malaria.In a message to the media on Monday, the outfit said that he died of cerebral malaria on February 14.
