India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Opinion poll give Cong 11 seats, BJP 3

Ajmal campaigns for Subba

AIUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal on Friday campaigned for Mani Kumar Subba following the ailment of the Tezpur independent candidate.Ajmal left for Tezpur by a helicopter where he held two huge rallies and urged the people to vote for the former Congress MP.Before that in the morning, the perfume baron visited Subba at the GNRC Hospital and agreed to campaign for him. Subba’s wife and daughter also would campaign on the last day on Saturday.

A former ULFA militants’ body tore apart Akhil Gogoi a day after the KMSS announced list of candidates of his choice for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, the organization alleged that Gogoi struck secret deal with AGP, BJP and AIUDF where he agreed to back a section of candidates in the name of crusade against the ruling party.They further brought some serious allegations against Gogoi saying that what he said on Thursday are not completely true.  

Guwahati warlords file nominations

Three political heavyweights in Guwahati filed their nominations on Friday.All these candidates were taken to the DC office premises with huge processions in Amingaon. A team of specialists is closely monitoring the condition of Mani Kumar Subba after the Tezpur independent candidate was rushed to the GNRC following a mild stroke on Thursday.The former Congress MP was admitted in the Guwahati based private nursing hospital a 4-30 in the afternoon when he was airdashed from LakhimpurThe special ambulance landed in Guwahati at around 3-30 in the afternoon to be straightly rushed to GNRC where a team of experts is trying to give him the best possible treatment.Tezpur Congress candidate Bhupen Bora has wished him a speedy recovery at an earlier date.  

No smoking in polling booths

The state election authorities have strictly prohibited smoking in all polling booths during the upcoming three-phase Lok Sabha elections from April 7.A team of the organisation led by VHAA executive secretary Ruchira Neog called upon CEO Vijayendra on Wednesday requesting him to issue an order in this connection. The CEO assured them of steps to look into the matter.Smoking at polling booths, which are categorised as public places, was banned under Section 4 of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003. 

KMSS to back AGP, BJP, AIUDF

KMSS president Akhil Gogoi on Thursday announced a list of poll candidates to be voted in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi appealed to the people to vote for Sarbananda Sonowal, Rajen Gohain, Rameswar Teli, Kabindra Purkayasha and Ram Prasad Sarma.He said that AGP candidate Dr Arun Sarma and Birendra Prasad Baishya, Madhab Rajbanshi should be elected in Koliabor, Guwahati, Mongoldoi respectively.    In Barpeta, Gogoi said, the voters should support U Barman (CPI) and Pratima Inghi from CPI(ML) should be supported in Diphu.

KMSS president Akhil Gogoi urged AGP, BJP and AIUDF to jointly draw up a slew of strategies to defeat all Congress candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi cited 12 main reasons of why the people should reject the ruling party.He further said the Left Front is weak and it has no strength to firmly deal with the ruling party and that other opposition parties should go all out against Congress.

Joseph Toppo falls sick

After Mani Kumar Subba, Tezpur AGP candidate Joseph Toppo is ailing.The sitting MP is undergoing treatment of high blood pressure at a local nursing home in Biswanath Chariali on Thursday.Toppo, fell ill when he was holding a poll rally in Biswanath Charilai at around 1-30 in the afternoon.
