Documentary 'Baruar Xongxar' on Iconic Assam House Unveiled for 54th IFFI Premiere

Guwahati: The trailer and poster for 'Baruar Xongxar' (The House of Baruas), a documentary highlighting the renowned Assam-type house at Latasil in Guwahati and its influential occupants, were released on November 11, 2023. The 71-minute film, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Utpal Borpujari, will have its world premiere at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa, under the Indian Panorama section.

The poster and trailer launch, attended by legendary musician Ramen Barua and eminent singer Dwipen Barua, took place at the centennial house. Producers Nayan Prasad, Jemini Phukan, and Dibyajyoti Saharia, from Surjya and Jemini Phukan Production, joined the event along with key members of the film's crew.

Both Ramen Barua and Dwipen Barua expressed their gratitude, emphasizing the significance of documenting their historic house's story through this documentary. Dwipen Barua stated, "The film will take the story of our family to people not only within Assam but hopefully also to those outside the state."

Eminent theatre personality and film producer Nayan Prasad highlighted their support for the film as a tribute to the iconic family on the centenary of their equally-iconic house. Director Utpal Borpujari shared the film's purpose, stating, "The Baruas are surely the only family in Assam, and perhaps in entire India, that has produced so many noted personalities in fields as diverse as cinema, music, sports, and politics."

The Barua house, constructed in 1923, has been home to notable personalities such as filmmaker Brajen Barua, footballer Nip Barua, singer Ramen Barua, cricketer Dwipen Barua, and others. The family's contributions span across cinema, music, sports, and politics, and the documentary aims to showcase these diverse achievements.

'Baruar Xongxar' features recreated compositions by Ramen Barua and contributions from renowned musician Rupam Talukdar. The film documents the family's significant contributions and is set to premiere at IFFI Goa, celebrating a century of the iconic Barua house.

Note: 'Baruar Xongxar' translates to 'The House of Baruas' in Assamese.
