Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

Security forces are spreading along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border to rescue Anil Kumar Agarwal a day after suspected NDFB (S) militants kidnapped the general manager with National Hydroelectric Power Corporation.He was abducted at gun point from Bhalukpung in Sonitpur district on Saturday on his way to Guwahati. Agarwal was posted as general manager in the NHPC's 800 MW power project, under construction at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.Police called it a handiwork of the NDFB (Songbijit) faction. One more rhino was killed for its horn in Kaziranga. The incident took place in the Burahpahar range of the national Park. The male rhino was gunned down between Khorali and Borbhug forest camps on Tuesday night. Around 8 PM the forest guards heard gun shots and retaliated leading to heavy exchange of fire with the poachers for one and half hours. Launching a search operation today, the rhino carcass was recovered with its horn sawed away and empty cartridges of AK 47 and .303 rifles scattered near it. The Park and Forest Department officials suspect that poachers, helped by agents living near KNP, drive adult rhinos towards Buraphar and Bagori ranges to kill them.

Yet another incident of suicide rocked Guwahati on Wednesday. It took place in Christanbasti. Identified as Jintu Phukan, the youth who worked with a shop in Fancy Bazar area hanged himself inside his rent room.
A college girl in Ujanbazar area in Guwahati committed suicide sending shockwaves in the city. Identified as Navanita Chakarbartty, the girl who hailed from Nalbari hanged herself inside her room at a girls hostel. She had a brilliant academic career who was doing medical coaching course.
