Rare honour for NE physician Dr Goswami

Guwahati: The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) has honoured Dr Bhabadev Goswami, a leading Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist of northeast India, with its prestigious fellowship. The former head of the Department Gastroenterology in Gauhati Medical College and presently attached to city-based Dispur Hospitals, Dr Goswami becomes the first gastroenterologist from NE to be elected for the fellowship.

He is among five gastroenterologists from India this year for the fellowship offered by ACG, which is recognized as one of the largest bodies of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the world. Enriched with over 14000 members hailing from 46 countries, ACG honours few physicians, who make a significant impact in the field of gastroenterology, electing them for the fellowship every year.

Other Indian physicians, who advanced to fellowship this year from the Bethesda (Maryland) based association, include Dr Sunil Kumar Dadhich, Dr Bhavesh J Patel, Dr Vijay Sharma and Dr Manish Thapar. The list of ACG fellows also comprises Dr Muhammad Adnan, Dr Muayad A. Alkhafaji, Dr Allan W. Barbish, Dr Steven Batash, Dr Scott A. Berger, Dr Tyler M. Berzin, Dr Muhammad B. Bestari, Dr Cherif Boutros, Dr Milutin M. Bulajic, Dr Seshadri Chandrasekar, Dr Mohamad Ali Eloubeidi, Dr Linda A. Feagins, Dr Bhabadev Goswami, Dr Dominique E. Howard, Dr John J. Already a fellow of Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI), Dr Goswami is also an international member of ACG, American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL).

Recipient of Economic Times Inspiring Gastroenteritis of India award in 2018, Dr Goswami has more than 45 national and international publications, who has made several scientific presentations in and outside the country.

The Sonitpur police have registered a case against a district council member in Arunachal Pradesh in connection with the Wednesday’s Bihali firing where 10 villagers died.According to sources, police filed a suo moto case against Balijan district council member Nabam Ekka charging him with aiding and abetting the miscreants who attacked the camp in the afternoon.    On the other hand, protesters have demanded the Arunachal Pradesh government to hand over the miscreants within the next 48 hours. BPF legislators have asked the Congress leadership to ensure the victory of Biswajeet Daimary in the Rajya Sabha polls otherwise the candidate would pull out of the poll process.Immediately after collecting the papers for withdrawal of the nomination by Daimary on Thursday, BPF MLAs tried to reach the Congress leadership to discuss the issue.The Congress leadership is believed to have told BPF not to take any hasty decision in this regard. Congress sources called it a pressure tactic by the BPF.
A Bangladesh court on Thursday ordered capital punishment for ULFA chief Paresh Baruah along with 14 others in the sensational arms smuggling case.The order was issued by the Chittagang court in the country three and a half years after it ordered arrest of the ULFA chief in the case where police seized ten trucks of arms and ammunition meant for Paresh Baruah in 2004.  
BPF candidate Biswajeet Daimary is likely to pull out of the race for the Rajya Sabha polls slated for February 7.Daimary on Thursday collected papers for withdrawal of nomination papers. Talking to reporters at the Assam Assembly secretariat he said that BPF can’t go it alone in the Rajya Sabha polls. He said that he would contest if he was sure of success.“Otherwise I won’t contest. We will win only with Congress support. But if I am projected as the third choice, we won’t be able to manage the number,” said Daimary.         
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi reviewed the situation in Sonitpur district with deputy commissioner Lalit Gogoi and police superintendent Sanyukta Parashar on Thursday.Immediately after laying the foundation stone of the Tezpur Medical College in Tubuki, Gogoi drove to Bihali and condemned the incident.AGP and BJP also rushed their teams to study the situation in the wake of the firing incident.
Local people in large number are on an indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh in Harmoti a day after the firing incident in Bihali where 10 villagers were killed on Wednesday.Thousands of people in the area blocked the National Highway No 52 to prevent supply of essential commodities to Arunachal Pradesh. Nearly one hundred trucks carrying essential commodities are remaining stranded under the impact of the blockade.

KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi, who joined the blockade said that the economic blockade would be indefinite.
AASU activists across the state on Thursday staged dharna in protest against the fielding of Sanjay Singh in the Rajya Sabha polls.Students in districts and sub divisional headquarters hanged  the effigies of Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi, chief minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita in public places and later burnt down these alleging that the Congress party has been using the state as its dumping ground.
Fear and panic seem to have struck Sivasagar town after an explosion at an oil well on Thursday.The explosion took place with a huge sound in the wee hours at the Oil Well NO 14 in Rudrasagar resulting in speedy emission of gas in the entire area. The explosion is believed to have taken place due to technical snag.Senior civil, police and ONGC officials arrived on the spot and started evacuating the local residents to ensure their safety. Hundreds of panic-stricken people in the area are leaving their homes from early in the morning. ONGC experts are trying to bring the situation under control.
