Gangmumei Kamei Memorial lecture held

The 2nd Gangmumei Kamei Memorial lecture was organized by the G.K. Foundation on Sunday, the 6th January, 2019 at The Classic Hotel, Imphal. Eminent Anthropologist and General Secretary, The Asiatic Society, Kolkatta delivered the Memorial Lecture on the topic “A Humane Journey into the nature of Human Culture : A personal narrative”. He illuminated the learned gathering by taking the audience into a journey in understanding human culture from a very simple society to its development into a more complex urban society.

Prof. Ksh. Bimola Devi, retired professor of Political science, Manipur University presided over the function. The function was well attended by a galaxy of intellectuals of Manipur, journalists, eminent scholars and well wishers.

Three people were injured when a powerful IED exploded in Imphal East’s Khurai Ahongei around 10:30 am Monday. Manipur state cabinet has approved Rs 10 crore for Manipur State Journalists Welfare Scheme.  Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh informed this during a function to distribute 35th Journalist’s Award of Kanagleipakki Meira daily. One case of pandemic influenza A H1N1, also known as swine flu has been detected in Imphal West.  Health Minister L Jayantakumar on Saturday officially confirmed the swine flu case during a press conference at the Old Secretariat conference hall.  He said a 45-year-old man, who has been admitted to Shija Hospital, Langol since July 4, is now a confirmed case of swine flu after a series of necessary tests. An unknown illness appeared to spread in the district as many as 49 people including children have reported becoming sick after an illness at the interior village of V Sinai on Monday.  They were admitted to the district hospital for treatment. Volunteers of the Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi (KKL) rushed them to the hospital by an ambulance. Authorities said the patients hailing from V Sinai near Patlen were having flu-like symptoms.  In a drug drive, a team of police led by Tengnoupal Superintendent of Police Dr S Ibomcha arrested four drug peddlers, including two women and 15 drug users yesterday. The drive was carried out at Moreh Ward No.4. The four drug peddlers were caught with 4 gm of heroin, 240 pieces of WY tablets, 320 of other intoxicant tablets and seven bottles of WY. The arrested were identified as H Shamo, resident of Moreh Ward No.4, Dimmu Mandim and Khaipou Zou, both residents of MOreh Ward No.2 and L Bishe, resident of Moreh Ward No.5. According to police, investigation has revealed that the arrested are mostly hailing from Neighbouring Myanmar. 
An emergency review meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh today decided to declare the present disaster facing the state due to flood as ‘state calamity.’ The Chief Minister also informed that he had requested the Central Government to declare the same as a calamity of ‘severe nature,’ according to a government release.
