Satra Mahasabha in the line of fire

GUWAHATI: Asom Satra Mahasabha, a lesser influential organization comprising the heads of the neo Vaishnavite monasteries have come in for sharp criticism after its delegation was understood to have endorsed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act before the Joint Parliamentary Panel in New Delhi on April 12.

Prominent personalities and organizations who have been dead opposed to the idea have strongly criticized the organization and demands a written statement clearing its position on the vexed issue.

AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya asked the organization to clear its position while other personalities including Dr Hiren Gohain, Harekrishna Deka, Udayaditya Bharali, Dr Lakhinandan Bora also slammed the organization for supporting the move to accord Indian citizenship to the immigrants.

But the officials who appeared before the JPC denied making any statement that would harm the state and its people. They told the reporters in New Delhi that the organizations would issue a statement soon.

The influential organizations, mostly, have opposed the Bill as they appeared before the JPC on Tuesday and asked the panel not to proceed further.
