Supreme Court hears Assam 'select killings' case

A Division Bench of Supreme Court of India comprising JJ Dalbir Bhandari and H.S. Bedi after hearing Prof. Bhim Singh, Advocate for the petitioner ALOK, a human right group in Assam and Mr. Amarender, Senior Advocate for the Union of India regarding the case of Select Killings in Assam between 1998 and 2001 known as Select Killings, the Supreme Court allowed Prof. Bhim Singh to file Additional Affidavit in connection with extending the jurisdiction and scope of Justice K.N. Saikia Commission and enhancement of compensation to the victims upto 50 lacs. from 3.5 lacs. This was stated in a press release from the Prof. Singh's office in New Delhi

ALOK, a human right activist has filed a petition in the Supreme Court for inquiry and appropriate action into the secret killing of about 300 innocent civilians who were well-wishers of ULFA in Assam during the period of 1998 to 2001. Notice was issued by Supreme Court to the Government of Assam and Union of India. The Government of Assam appointed retired Justice K.N. Saikia who has submitted an investigation report of 40 persons only. The Government of Assam had referred case of only 40 persons to the Commission.

Prof. Bhim Singh urged the court to direct the Government of Assam to refer the cases of all the victims and provide a compensation of Rs.50 lacs. at least. Justice K.N. Saikia in his report has agreed that all the victims were taken from their homes secretly and later killed by the police.

Prof. Bhim Singh in his submissions wanted to submit further details about the remaining victims. The court allowed Prof. Bhim Singh. In the meantime the Supreme Court has given six months to the Assam Government to identify the heirs to verify the next of the kins of the victims.

ULFA claims responsibility of Demow blast

ULFA's Paresh Baruah faction owned up the responsibility of the grenade blast at the Demow police station on Tuesday. In a statement on Wednesday, the outfit alleged that they struck the police station in protest against the police excess on common people. Officer in charge of the police station Sanjib Baruah has been transferred on Wednesday. NRC panel submits report to CM

Chopper service provider official arrested in Guwahati

Guwahati police have arrested a fraud on Wednesday after he duped a section of people promising chopper service to remote areas of Assam. Azara police arrested the fraud, identified as Manosij Roy who is the director with Rus Aviators got lakhs of rupees cleared from Dima Hasao autonomous council citing preparedness to introduce the service in the hills district. Police arrested him from Azara in Guwahati on the basis of the complaint lodged by the Dima Hasao autonomous council authorities. Roy was later remanded to judicial custody after he was produced before the court.

Encounter in Dhemaji: NDFB cadre arrested

Police arrested a hardcore NDFB cadre after a heavy exchange of firing in Dhemaji district on Wednesday. The fierce encounter took place in the afternoon during a search operation by the security forces. The militants managed to escape the spot amid darkness. The arrested militants was identified as Kumar Narjary who hails from Kokrajhar.

80,000 hectares of land under illegal occupation

Five neighbouring states have been illegally occupying over 80,000 hectares of land belonging to Assam. Disclosing this at the state legislative assembly, Assam Border Areas Minister of State Siddique Ahmed said that the land is under occupation of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura. The encroached lands are in 14 districts of Assam -- Tinsukia, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Kamrup Metro, Kamrup Rural, Goalpara, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj. ULFA strikes again; blast at police station

After a brief halt ULFA’s anti-talk faction is trying to make its presence felt forcing the security forces to step in. Suspected ULFA militants night attacked a police station in Sivasagar district with a powerful grenade on Tuesday. The blast took place at Demow police station at around 8-30 in the evening. There was no casualty but it partially damaged the window panes of the police station. According to eyewitness, two youths born in motorcycle lobbed the grenade and vanished immediately after the blast. Security forces, however, have launched operation to nab the culprits.

Leopard ruthlessly beaten up to death

A full grown leopard was killed and four others have been injured when a section of local residents pounded on these creatures in Guwahati on Sunday. The incident took place in at Garobasti in Durga Sarobar area near Maligaon at around 4 in the afternoon. Local residents in large number came out as when they came to see the leopards in the afternoon. KYKL militant captured in Guwahati

Security forces have apprehended a Manipur-based KYKL militant from Guwahati on Saturday. Acting on a tip off, police captured the militant in South Sarania and seized a laptop, two mobiles along with lots of incriminating documents from his possession. Identified as Rajkumr Ishwarchandra, he has been hiding in Guwahati for the last three months. Interrogation is continuing.
