Amidst multi-layer security arrangement, President of India this morning arrived in Guwahati. She was received by CM, Governor and other high officials at the LGBI Airport. During her maiden visit to Assam Her Excellency President Smti Pratibha Devisingh Patil today presented the prestigious Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Award at Progjyotika ITA Cultural Complex this evening. Her Excellency presented the award to prominent journalist of the nation Shri Shekar Gupta for the year 2006 and to actor and social activist Shabana Azmi for the year 2007. Governor of Assam Shri Shiv Charan Mathur and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi attended the award presentation ceremony as Guest of Honour. The Government of Assam has hoisted a cultural program showcasing rich ethnic cultural heritage of Assam in honour of Her Excellency.
The five-day tour , which will cover Assam and Meghalaya, is one of the longest presidential visits to the region On Monday; the first woman President of the country is scheduled to give away the Nirmal Gram Awards. Gram Panchayats from 13 States of the Eastern and North Eastern part of the country will receive these awards formally at Sarusajai stadia. Official sources informed that during her visit, President Patil will also address a meeting of the self-help groups. In this course of time she will take note of all aspects of Assam. She is also scheduled lay a foundation laying stone ceremony of Tezpur Medical College Hospital in Tezpur.. " In Tezpur, Supereme Commander of Defence Smti. Patil will also address the troops at the Indian Army's 4 Corps headquarters," the sources added.
After spending three days in Assam, the President will proceed to Meghalaya on Wednesday, where she is expected to attend the centenary celebrations of the Laban Bengali Girls Higher Secondary School. The President will also inaugurate the Baljek Airport in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
