GUWAHATI: Security forces are fanning in the nook and corner of the state to counter the ULFA(I) and NDFB(S) rebels who are believed to have been preparing to strike in the run up to the Republic Day. Tight vigil is in place at the dense jungles along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh in Tinsukia, Assam-Nagaland border in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat areas apart from the round-the-clock vigil along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Goalpara district. Army, police and para military forces have been guarding the oil& gas installations, rail lines and vital bridges to thwart the rebel attempts. Vehicles plying on the roads are being minutely checked apprehending the movement of the rebel elements in any form.

Tinsukia, March 22: Suspected militants of the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) launched a pre-dawn attack on an Assam Police commando camp in the Jagun area of Tinsukia district, leaving at least four security personnel injured.
According to reports, the militants attacked the camp around 2 a.m., allegedly lobbing several grenades and opening fire with automatic weapons. Security forces retaliated, leading to an exchange of fire that lasted for several minutes before the attackers fled the scene.
