Political issue nearing end: Zeliang

Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang lauded the Churches, Civil Societies and the NGOs for facilitating the resolution of the Naga political issue. He said that with their contribution and co-operation, the DAN Govt since its installation to office in March 2003, had accorded highest priority to the Naga Political Issue and continues to do so.


Speaking at the Consultative Meet of the Nagaland Legislators Forum with Ex-Parliamentarians on Naga Political Issue on Thursday at RCEMPA-Jotsoma, Kohima he said 'Efforts at bringing about better understanding between the different NNPGs and drawing them closer to each other has been made while numerous resolutions were passed by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and other forums to give the right impetus to the Peace Process from time to time.”


Zeliang said that the credit for bringing the various factions together on a common platform went to 'the Tribal Hohos and its Apex Bodies, the Church, Civil societies, NGOs and the NNPGs.'


            To bolster efforts in facilitation of the Peace process, mention may be made that an all Member DAN Cabinet led by the Chief Minister had gone to Delhi to urge for an early settlement of the Naga Political issue especially in view of the upcoming Assembly Elections.


Though the delegation could not meet the Prime Minister owing to his busy engagements and tour programs in connection with Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, the Team met Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh; Minister DONER, Jitendra Singh; National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval; Deputy NSA & Interlocutor for Naga Peace Talks, R N Ravi; Secretary to Prime Minister, Bhaskar Khulbe; 6 NNPGs and NSCN (IM) Leader, Th. Muivah.


 


During the recent visit of the President, Ram Nath Kovind, a representation was submitted portraying the imperative need for resolving the protracted Naga political problem before the ensuing State Assembly Elections. A similar representation is to be submitted to the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh who will be arriving at Kisama for the Hornbill Festival on Friday.


 The issue dominating every political discourse since Statehood has been settlement of the Naga political issue and till date, it continues to be the main focus of the Government, past and present, and every Political party in Nagaland.

 


Considering the present moment as the most opportune time for the Nagas and the Government of India to resolve the seven decades old Naga political issue, Chief Minister TR Zeliang called for 'one vision, one mission and one goal' in finding a lasting solution to the vexed Naga political problem at the earliest.

Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents. 
Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state. He said that the government is leaving no stone unturned to put Assam on a track of rapid development process. Patnaik also said that government was committed to fighting corruption. Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Private vehicles and large number of people on foot were also seen making their way to the various R-Day celebration venues across the state.The N-E insurgent outfits had called for boycott of Republic Day Celebrations from 1am to 5 30 in the morning.
Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. Tight security was put in place to ensure peace during the Republic Day and accordingly there was no report of any untoward incident so far. Assam governor JB Patnaik unfurled the national flag and took salute of the armed forces and school children at Khanapara in presence of Chief minister Tarun Gogoi. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning.
