GUWAHATI:Veteran actor Biju Phukan is dead. He was 70. Phukan, the doyen of Assamese film world suddenly died of cardiac arrestin the afternoon.
According to information, Phukan, who was not keeping well for the last couple of days suddenly fell seriously ill and his family members rushed him to the Apollo Hospital in Guwahati and died minutes after he was admitted in ICU.
He is survived by his wife Rajashree, daughter Sanghamita and son Angshuman.
Many film personalities and his fans are thronging his residence in the city and the hospital premises as soon as the news of his tragic death spread like wild fire.
The Assam government is organizing his cremation with full state honour on Thursday.

Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents.
Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.
He said that the government is leaving no stone unturned to put Assam on a track of rapid development process. Patnaik also said that government was committed to fighting corruption.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning.
