India got its first woman President. Pratibha Patil won the Presidential elctions by 3,06,810 votes. Pratibha Patil, the UPA candidate defeated her rival Bhairon Singh Shekhawat who was backed by the NDA.There was some cross voting by BJP dissidents in Gujrat and Madhya Pradesh.
Bhairon Shingh Shekhawat has resigned from the position of Vive President as well
In Assam, Pratibha Patil has secured 92 votes while Shekhawat has secured 20 votes.

At this movement UPA-Left nominee Pratibha Patil has elected as President of India defeated NDA backed Independent candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat by over three lakh votes.She received 638,116 votes while Shekhawat got 331,306 votes.today made history by getting elected as the first woman President of the country. Dr.Bhabendranath Saikia’s National Award-winning Assamese film Agnisnan will be screened in London on August 14 to commemorate his 4th death anniversary. Saikia won two National Awards for best film and best screenplay for Agnisnan in 1985. The film will be shown at the Nehru Center auditorium, situated in the campus of the Indian High Commission in London. Seven of his movies — Sandhya Rag, Anirban, Agnisnan, Kolahal, Sarothi, Abarton and Itihas — won the Rajat Kamal award for best regional films. Saikia died on 13 August 2003. He had done his PhD in Nuclear Physics from London University.

Guwahati: One lady has jumped before a running train with her two-year-old child on Sunday at 10.30 AM at Abhayapuri in Bongaigaon district. Both were killed on the spot. They were identified as Mridula Das (30 years) and her son Aditya of Bishnu Nagar, Goalpara. Her husband is an engineer posted at Agartala. She committed suicide near Abhayapuri Rail Station immediately after down Chilarai Passenger left the station. Police has lodged an unnatural death case in this regard.
