Both Assam and Meghalaya are in a mood to resolve the vexed interstate border dispute with an acceptable formula. The Meghalaya Government has written to its Assam counterpart on Tuesday proposing a day in between September 19 and 22 for a talk between the two chief secretaries. Sources told Assam Times that the proposed meeting would mark the resumption of the earlier rounds of talks between Dispur and Shillong on the same issue. Signed by Meghalayastate Chief Secretary Y. Tsering, the letter was sent to Dispur on Tuesday. “Now let Dispur fix the schedule of the proposed talks at an earlier date,” said a senior officer in Shilong. The move for the resumption of the talks takes place a couple of days after Assam minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on the floor of the assembly alleged encroachment by the neighbouring state in Langpih area.

Campaigning for the first phase of panchayat polls ends. Polls will tae place Wednesday.
The first phase will decide the fate of altogether 28,680 candidates in eight districts.
Of them, 643 candidates will contest for the post of Zilla Parishad member, 2,801 for Anchalik Panchayat member, 3,099 candidates for Gaon Panchayat president's post and 22,137 candidates filed their nominations for Gaon Panchayat membership.
First phase will include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Kaliabor, Nagaon Sadar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts. The counting of votes would take place on February 14 and February 15.

The Delhi government has agreed to set up a statute of Chaolung Sukapha in the national capital. The assurance came from Delhi Chief minister Sheila Dixit who talked to her Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi. Before that Gogoi in a letter requested Dixit to consider the proposal to set up the first Ahom king in the national capital. The initiative assumes significance after the government invited unprecedented criticism for not giving due status to the Ahom king.
