Chapormukh: Calm but tense

An uneasy calm prevails in Chapormukh area in the central Assam district of Nagaon forcing the authority to keep the security forces on alert on Saturday.

The situation turned uneasy suddenly after a person belonging to a particular group alleged to have passed an uncharitable comment on the saint Sankardev to be confronted by a small team of youths who were organizing a huge rally in protest the Panigaon where a group of traders attacked give former ULFA rebels as they were raising funds to feed the flood hit people on Thursday. 

But immediate arrival of the security forces stopped the tussle from spreading in the evening. “The area has, mostly, Bangla-speaking people who have been doing business for years. Earlier, some mild tussles took place. But we want to warn them of dire consequences if they, in any way, want to confront us,” said Bijon Saikia, a Raha College student who attended the rally. 

Anupoma Kakoty, a local school teacher in the told Assam Times that tolerance is what the need of the hour. “See the people of Assam are waging a war only against a group of goons in the guise of traders. But not even a Bangla speaking person I have seen in this rally. They are keeping mum. Should not they come out?” 

The protestors in the rally solemnly vowed to fight the elements who have been trying to sabotage Assam and it's people apart from plundering the resources.

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Raha police station committed suicide by shooting himself at his official residence on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Subhash Gogoi posted at Raha police station in May 21,2015. Marred by a slew of untoward incidents, the 12 hour central Assam bandh concluded on Monday evening called by 8 organizations demanding the proposed AIIMS in Raha. The untoward incident took place when a section of bandh supporters tried to enforce bandh call by pelting stones and water bottles at some vehicles on the National Highway No 37 in Raha. Two persons were injured when suspected militants lobbed a grenade on a hardware shop named Khatuwala hardware at Raha chariali on National Highway 37 on Tuesday evening police said. The suspected ultras hurled a grenade on the shop at 6.45 p.m, police said. Police said the grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the entrance of the shop causing splinter injuries to two laboures of the shop. The polling in Raha LAC (SC) passed off peacefully except one incident of malfunctioning of EVMS at 104 no. Sial Bhangi LP Schooli. Ram Madhav, National General Secretary, BJP and Ajay Jamwal, General Secretary, BJP  for NE states today visited Raha to take stock of the security scene ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Raha on April 8.
