The overall flood scene remains unchanged on Wednesday bringing brimful misery to millions of people in thr north eastern state where nearly two dozen people were washed away in the second wave.
The mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still overflowing following the incessant rains in the catchment areas and the surging waters have spilled to many areas in 23 district rendering nearly 77 lakh people homeless.
The situation in the worst-hit Nagaon district have refused to improve after the overflowing waters breached a vital dyke in three places in Kaliabor on Tuesday wee hours sending a huge volume of waters to the river Kolong which is overflowing with rain waters.
“If the rains refuse to relent today, within the next couple of hours our town will submerged since the sluicegate must open to discharge the excess waters. No option is left,” said Kamala Saikia in the Amolapatty area in the central Assam town.
Army, NDRF, SDRF jawans are on relief and rescue operations in the affected areas while Indian Air Force has been airdropping relief materials to the marooned people in the remote and inaccessable areas.

Apart from Nagaon, other worst-hit districts include Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Goal Para, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh where the government has set up as many as 900 relief camps.
Many organizations and non governmental organizations have also been helping the marooned people shift to the relief camps. These organizations, mostly, have been distributing relief materials among the flood hit people.
The government has instructed the district authorities to ensure adequate food, medicines and potable water to the camps. Doctors and nurses have been deployed in most of the relief camps.
Normal surface communication remains cut off in the flood hit areas. Train services in the entire north eastern region remains unmoved for third consecutive day on Wednesday.
