Flood situation again taking alarming turn

The over all flood scenario in Assam remains unchanged during the last 15 hours. On Monday morning the water levels of the mighty Brahmaputra showed a receding trend but it did not last long. With a heavy downpour lashing the state on Monday night, the situation again took a grim turn. The Assam government has admitted that the current wave of flood fury is alarming. Lakhs of those marooned in the perennial fury have yet to leave the make-shift camps in the affected areas.
According to information, more than 13 lakh people have been reeling under the current flood wave. These include 2,41,884 in Lakhimpur, 16,4,800 in Sonitpur, 25,624 in Dhemaji, 3,44,021 in Morigaon and 61,150 in Dhubri districts.

Moreover, Hajo sub division of Kamrup district has 20,000 flood affected people with 80,000 other in Rangiya sub division. Similarly, the number of flood affected people in Barpeta district stands at 159264, Majuli at 1,00,000, Dhubri at 66,150, Kokrajhar 111720, Bonmgaigaon at 1,00,000 Mangaldoi at 83,000 and Nalbari at 62,800. On the other hand, government sources have confirmed death toll at 17.

The current flood wave has left a total land area measuring approximate 2,60,000 hectares affected. The number of villages affected by flood is 190 in Majuli, 345 in Lakhimpur, 65 in Dhemaji, 27 in Sonitpur, 82 in Rangiya with 18 in Hajo circle in Kamrup rural district. On the other hand, Morigaon has 316 flood affected villages, Barpeta 316, Nagaon 80, Darrang 20, Kokrajhar 107, Bongaigaon 80, Mangaldoi 83 besides 50 villages in Nalbari. Besides, the figure of cropland submerged by the current wave is said to be 136345 lakh hectares.

The estimated value of damaged crops stands at Rs 4095.70 lakh while the number of houses damaged in the flood is said to be 51272. On the other hand, the value of damaged houses has been estimated at Rs 51.25 crores while the estimated value of total damage has been announced as Rs 100 crores.
