Today is September 8, 2008. Assam is celebrating the 83rd birth day of music legendary music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika albeit the birthday boy is in Mumbai. Birthday wishes are pouring in for the pride of Assam and Dada Saheb Phalke award winning singer. Several organization on Monday are celebrating the day across the state.
A special screening of a documentary film on the life and works of, produced by Surjya Hazarika was held at the auditorium of the Assam Handloom and Textiles department office on Sunday. The documentary film titled Bihangam Drishtit Dr Bhupen Hazarika throws light on the life and works of the Phalke awardee. Many eventful moments of Dr Hazarika’s life have been covered in the film. The English version if the film titled Dr Bhupen Hazarika: A Living Legend was screened at the St Adrews Hall of London south Gate in July last and won accolades from the viewers.

More and more serious allegations seemed to have surfaced against MLA Jiten Gogoi. The independent MLA from Bokakhat allegedly unleashed terror at the residence of an AGP leader on Friday. According to information, the surrendered ULFA rebel went to the yard of AGP leader Girin Gogoi on Friday evening and warned that he would shoot him dead. Not only that an angry Gogoi unleashed terror with blank-firing before leaving the spot. The reason is yet to be ascertained. The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Golaghat organized a self help group mela at the New Jail Market, Golaghat. As many as 30 nos. of SHGs of different development blocks of the district took part in the event. The main object of the mela was to promote the Assamese traditional items made by different SHG groups during the festival time.
Thirteen activists of two underground organizations of Assam have formally laid down arms to Manipur Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh at the Mantripukhri head-quarters of IGAR (South) on Wednesday.
