Manipur flood: Minister assures farmers
Agriculture, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Minister V Hangkhanlian appealed to the flood affected farmers not to panic over loss of crop due to floods.
The Minister was on a visit to the site of the Raising of Community Nursery, conducted by Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur, at Haotal, Pangei on Wednesday. The minister dispersed rice seeds varieties such as RCM-10 and RCM-12 at the nursery.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines, Hangkhalien said that compensation for the farmers affected by floods would be provided under natural calamity relief fund for which the state government has already put forward to the Central Government.
“Compensation will be given to all farmers once the fund is available. The government has made all possible efforts to help farmers,” he said.
The minister said all steps have been taken to purchase alternative crops in case if there is no recovery from the current floods.
Efforts are on to grow hybrid rice in selected areas like Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal districts, he said but added that the government will not be in a position to cover the entire Manipur.
The minister, however, said the crop yield is unpredictable as the hybrid rice cultivation will take place for the first time in the state.
“The department is planning to cultivate these crops in the elevated areas in flooded fields also. If the flood water do not recede till August next, we have no option but to purchase other alternative crops,” he added.

A 4 magnitude earthquake no less struck panic in the northeastern state of Manipur on Friday. Originated in Ukhrul, the tremor was felt across the state at 10.04 in the evening forcing many people in the high rise buildings to come down to the open space. “As I was watching television, suddenly I came to feel the jolt as the clock struck at 10.4 in the evening.
