Veteran Journalist H N Barua Memorial Lecture

Delivering the Harendra Nath Barua memorial lecture on the occasion of the 21st death anniversary of the stalwart, Dr D Borah the speaker of the event said that as Assamese nationalism was founded on language, people of all faith, language and race have become a part of this nationalism. Dr Dhrubajyoti Borah, Suprintendant, Jorhat Medical College and a renown academician also an acclaimed writer asserted that the root of Assamese nationalism was language on which the sentiments of the people has survived and flourished.

H N Baruah Memorial Trust organized the lecture at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir, Uzan Bazar Nationalism cannot be seen in lines of religion and mother tongue alone if so migrators of pre-1970s from East Bengal now Bangladesh and Greater Nepal which has become a part of India would be dubbed as foreigners. After the Assamese,Tea Workers of Gardens, Bengalis of East Bengal, Nepali (now Gorkhas) of then Greater Nepal heads the list of Assamese speakers in Assam which has given strength to the Assamese Nationalism.

Elaborately speaking on Assamese-speaking people, Dr Borah said that amongst the 300 important languages of the world, Assamese language occupied the 57th position. He said that the number of people considered the main speakers of the Assamese language stood at 1.56 crore, the number of people that have accepted the language as their second language stood between 80 lakh to one crore and those that have accepted the language as their third language, their number was between 2.5 to three lakh.

Dr Borah said that the sum of all speakers, the total number of Assamese speakers was 2.67 crore. "All these people who can speak Assamese are the pillars of the nation and Assamese nationalis on this root," added the academician.

He cautioned the present media against all unfortunate odd incidents and applaud the role of media in growth of Nationalism ethics and upliftment of language.

The memorial function was presided over by veteran journalist Radhika Mohan Bhagawati. He was felicitated by the trust and several other organisaton and family members of H N Barua on the occasion for completing 50 years in the field of journalism.

The function was attended by many dignified citizens including noted critic Nalinidhar Bhattacharya. Poets, Senior Journalists and literates demanded Govt. of Assam to confer Barua for prestigious Bharat Ratna posthumously or endorse an award in the field of Journalism after his name.

One suspected hardcore Gorkha Liberation Army (GLA) outfit militant Arjun Chetri of Nagaland was today nabbed by state police at Dheraichuli while he was coming from Dalgoan towards Dekhiajuli in Sonitpur district.
