Flood erosion: Kolgachia on the brink

A devastating flood followed by erosion by the river Beki is posing serious threat to the existence of Kolgachia in Barpeta district rendering more than 3 lakhs people homeless in as many as ten villages.

More than 3 lakh people of ten villages have already been rendered homeless in Charcharia, Minisimola, Char Guleiza and Bobhanga. The people who have been rendered homeless have lost their cultivable land, schools along with houses of around 800 families when half of the area was eroded away by the river. The affected people have no option but to take shelter in the nearby dyke, that too bereft of government relief materials. The affected people have alleged government apathy saying they have failed to deliver the goods.

Local residents here say the situation has gone from bad to worse this year. The construction of the dam worth Rs 40 lakh has failed to serve its purpose. It was funded by CPI (M) MP Uddhav Barman, Jania MLA Abdul Rauf and Eshahok Ali.
