Four arrested for assaults

Police apprehended four persons for involved with assaults an elderly woman on suspect of witch-hunting at Garopara village under Kazigaon PS in Kokrajhar district on Tuesday which has created sensaton in the area.

According to police, an elderly woman identified as Basanti Marak(50), wife of  Seckson Marak was dragged out by villagers on suspect of witch hunting on Tuesday noon and physically assaulted. They also threatened to kill her if she cannot cure one ailing person of the same village.Police immediately having information about incident rescued the victim from villagers by 2 pm in the after noon. Four persons were apprehended by police for involved with dragging out of woman in the evening.

 At around 7 PM, about 200 villagers gheraoed and tried to enter into the Kazigaon PS campus demanding release of the accusedsbesides some agitated villagers vandalised the PS campus and pelted stones which led police resorted to mild lathi charge and fired two rounds in the air to disperse the violent mob.

Situation was come under control by 8.30 pm in the evening and sharp watch and domination has been maitained.

An FIR has been lodged with police registered no.41/2017,u/s120(B)/147/148/447/325/294/307/511 IPC. The apprehended were identified as Sarseng Sangma,Samsung Marak,Mikel Marak and Miran Marak.

Mentioned be made that Marak’s family is Christian believer and discharging Pastor job in the locallity.

Villagers reached at my resident by noon and forcibly taken at a ailing person’s house to make cure on suspect of being bez and alter assaulted on her,said victim woman.

‘I don’t know nothing about bez or witch-hunting as villagers suspected me’,she added.

Seckson Marak,wife of victim woman told that his family dies not know anything about bez or black magic besides they never thought about such incident.

The arrested persons have been sent to jail in Kokrajhar. The investigatio is on into incident,said a senior police officer in Kokrajhar.
