PM arriving in Nagaon today

On the eve of the PM's arrival in Nagaon city, no stone has been left unturned to ensure foolproof security arrangements by the district administration. The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will address a public meeting at Nehrubali today at 2 pm on his way back to Guwahati from Jorhat. The Prime Minister will today at 12.00 pm lay the foundation of a new medical college in Assam- Jorhat Medical College.The district authority of Nagaon today announces 'local holiday' for PM's arrival in the city. A team of Doordarshon tv from New Delhi has already arrived in the city to telecast the live programme of Dr Singh's visit to Nagaon.The Minister of state Forest and Tourism, Rockibull Hussain confirms that the public meeting will be attended by not less than 50,000 people. A number of C C camera has been set up in and around the Nehrubali meeting ground as part of the security measures by the district administration.

Dr Apurba Kumar Saikia, a noted short story writer of Assam, was conferred the Jadab Sarma Memorial award at the Chandra Prasad Saikia Kshetra at the Nagaon Book Fair ground recently. The award was instituted in the memory of Jadab Sarma, a writer of the abahan era, since 2005.The award was presented to Dr Saikia for his short story collection 'Bojarat Edin'. Not less than 176 voters under Baghara Gaon Panchayat will be deprived from casting vote in the ensuing Panchayat polls in Morigaon district.According to sources, the names of the villagers of Middhralipather whose names omitted from the voters' list, were all Assamese people. The former MLA of Morigaon, Munin Mahanta expressed concern over these anomalies in voters list and demands the concerning authority to give the villagers their right back.

The Bharatiya Dalita Sahitya Academy has selected Narayan Radu Kakati, chairman of Tiwa Autonomous Council(TAC) for Dr Ambedkar Distinguished Service Award 2007, recognising his service to the society and other literary activities related to the development of the downtrodden and backward people.The award will be conferred on Kakati on December 9 at the National Conference of the Dalita Sahitya Academy to be held in New Delhi.It is worth mentioning that Kakati,the leader of autonomy struggle of Tiwa community since 1967,had contributed much to the literature of both Assamese and Tiwa language.

An Executive Member (EM) of Tiwa Autonomous Council, Hema Kanta Deka was arrested by police on November 10 on charges of cheating and illicit collection of money from unemployed youth of various parts of Nagaon and Morigaon districts assuring them government jobs. A police source revealed that Hema Kanta Deka, who also served as General Secretary of Morigaon District Youth Congress, has been pocketing lakhs of rupees from hundreds of unemployed youth since 1992, assuring them jobs specially teachers' ones in LP and ME schools of the aforesaid districts.
