Seminar on mushroom

The first national level seminar, first ever policy building process in the country, on mushroom has been held in Guwahati recently. The seminar was a jointly organised by Mushroom Development Foundation (MDF) and RuTAG - NE and was sponsored by the ASTEC and NEDFi.

The main objective of the seminar was, as stated by Pranjal Baruah, General Secretary, Mushroom Development Foundation, is to organize a policy building process on mushroom. During the period from 29th March to 27th April 2008 approximately 60 people lost their lives by eating poisonous mushrooms in Assam. These tragedies have not only taken the lives of the innocent people but also creating panic among the people. These incidents have an adverse effect on the mushroom farmers because the people's fear to eat food products made of mushroom. Moreover because of these type of incidents, sales of mushrooms came to a total stop throughout the state. So to tackle these problems, the Foundation is taking about framing a policy on mushroom, which will help to develop healthy economy. This seminar cum workshop aims to involve experts from various fields interact with the mushroom farmers, mushroom hunters and victims of wild mushroom poisoning coming from all over the North East.
