Sea of humanity breaks in Sivasagar as the ancient Ahom capital town is hosting the annual Shivratri with much traditional religious pomp and gaiety. Around 2 lakh people are said to have thronged the town to catch a glimpse of the festival from far flung areas if the country and abode.

Amid tight security arrangement, devotees are remaining in long queue at the Shiv temple premises to offer pujas to the Lord Shiva from early in the morning. The district administration has been closely monitoring the situation to ensure normalcy during the festival which will end on Sunday.

Apart from the Shivdol premises, the natural attraction is the fair and exhibitions with thousands of stalls by the entrepreneurs. Cultural functions are also lined up towards the evening. The district administration has made some changes in the roads for normal traffic movement in view of the heavy rush of devotees in the festival.

The event is being celebrated also in many places in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Nagaon, Golaghat, Sonitpur, Guwahati, Bongaigson and BTAD areas.

Government Extends AFSPA in Manipur Amidst Ethnic Clashes
