AASU centenary celebration in Raha
The role of the student leaders and organizations came up for a thought provoking discussion when students, educationists and prominent citizens participated at an open meeting in Raha on Sunday.
Organized by the local AASU unit, the open meeting stressed the role of the state’s influential student organization to take lead in the creation of a fresh atmosphere in the field of education where every citizen would try to eliminate illiteracy for good.
Raha area AASU president Sanjay Kumar Kakoty moderated the open discussion where the speakers asked the students to help the society get a clean image.
Local resident and educationist Hiranya Narayan Bora hoisted the AASU centenary flag at the Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Auditorium to be followed by the homage to the martyr's by Puren Das, Mridul Hazarika and Prahlad Masrong.
Raha AASU general secretary Pankaj Hazarika and former student leader Biren Bhattacharya also graced on the occasion at Raha, one of the one hundred places AASU allowed to hold the centenary celebration.

Acting on a tip off , Raha police on Tuesday arrested one person for trying to extort Rs 8 lakh from one Kanak Nath of Sariohtoli village under Raha revenue circle. Former Congress minister and MLA of Batadrava constituency Goutam Bora’s Inova vehicle ( AS01 AK-1597 ) met with an accident on Sunday noon at Dighaliati area at Raha. A 29-year-old married woman was murdered at her residence at Uttar Petboha village under Raha P.S on Thursday night. Sharp weapon injury marks were found on the neck, breast, and stomach of the victim,Paree Saikia. When the neighbours reached the spot, the victim was lying on the bed and she had deep slits on her throat. Tapan Das , Headmaster , Nelipar Primary School and a former leader of Raha unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) who actively participated in Assam agitation passed away at his house at Chaparmukh following prolonged illness on Tuesday. He was 54. A popular personality of the area, he was loved and respected by all sections of people for his amiable disposition. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter. A pall of gloom descended at Raha and Chaparmukh as soon as the news of his demise spread. Different organisations, including Raha AASU unit have mourned Das’s demise.

The body of a man was found on a train that arrived at Chaparmukh junction from Tinisukia on Sunday, police said. The body, found under mysterious condition, was identified as Kiranjyoti Hazarika of Philobari, Tinisukia district. According to Chaparmukh railway police, the deceased was on his way to Guwahati from Tinisulia by the Brahmaputra mail. The cause of the death is yet not confirmed.
Normal life remains heavily paralyzed in Raha following a 12 hour bandh by the various local organizations who are dead opposed to the proposed AIIMS in North Guwahati instead of central Assam.
