A collection of adventure stories in Assamese named Kutkut-Tuktukar Abhiyan by journalist-writer Nilotpal Barua was released at Guwahati Press Club on Thursday. Published by Pratishruti Prakashan, the book comprises eight stories, which were earlier published in popular Assamese children monthly ‘Sofura’. The book was officially released by Rupam Barua, editor of Sofura in presence of journalists Nava Thakuria, Bedabrat Bora, Abinash Sharma etc.
Normal life in many parts of Assam remains completely paralyzed on Tuesday when an Ahom organization enforced a 12 hour bandh opposing the move to auction 12 oil fields. The bandh mainly disrupted normal life in the upper Assam districts where schools and colleges, shops and markets, banks and offices refused to open. Expressing shocks at the mysterious death of a lady scribe in Punjab, the Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) demands an authentic probe into the incident to find the culprits and book them under the law. Freelance scribe Anshita Bawa (22) died under a strange situation on 22 April 2016 when she went to meet her friends, but she did not reach them. Rather her body and the vehicle, she drove, were found floating in a canal at Bool locality of Sudhar areas. A huge convention of human rights organizations in New Delhi recently outlined four major demands before the government to heal the wounds of the torture victims. Attended by human rights experts, activists, lawyers, journalists. Doctors and academics, the national convention in the capital asked the government to ratify the convention against torture which has been pending since 1997. The convention further demanded a new bill to in Parliament to prevent the torture incorporating within it the recommendations of the Select Committee of Parliament. Emphasizing on preventive healthcare initiatives for the media persons a special program titled ‘Evening with a Doctor’ is mooted at the premises of Guwahati Press Club (GPC). Under this program a practicing doctor will be available for free consultations on healthcare issues for the benefit of GPC member-journalists along with their close relatives. The Centre is believed to have been clearing the decks to grant refugee status to the Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants. According to highly placed sources the home ministry is finetuning some changes in the vital clauses of the Indian Citizenship Act 1955 to enable these migrants to stay in the country. The entire task is expected to end before August 15. If the amended Act is cleared in Parliament the refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan would be able to stay in the state. Flash flood have started wreaking havoc in Goalpara district displacing thousands of people during the last couple of days. The major rivers in the district have been overflowing following the heavy downpour in Meghalaya and the surging waters have inundated a huge area in the lower Assam district where thousands of people in several villages have been affected. The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) is all set to hit the streets again if the Centre fails to scrap the move for Indian citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants. The state’s influential student organization, in a statement made it plain and simple that never it would allow the immigrants who came to Assam after March 24, 1971 to remain in the state. AASU has threatened to launch a statewide massive movement to detect and deport the immigrants in question. Many people sustained injury when security forces sprang upon a group of KMSS activists in Guwahati who opposed the process to auction a dozen of oil fields in Assam on Saturday. The incident took place in front of the Hotel Redision Blue in the outskirt of the city where petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan was meeting the interested bidders in the morning.
