The Centre has put the Assam Government on alert apprehending ULFA's massive strike during the Independence day celebrations on August 15. According to information, acting on some specific inputs that ULFA is drawing up a blue print for a massive strike during the Independence Day programme, the Centre has alerted the Dispur to be extra vigilant. According to information, the Union home ministry has told Dispur to intensify security measures especially around vital installations as ULFA militants have been targeting these places in support of their demands.
The Centre further has asked Dispur to deploy adequate security personnel in all towns and Guwahati city as there have been recent strikes by the rebels in urban areas. This was discussed in detail at a meeting of Unified Command Structure held in Guwahati on recently in presence of senior officials of Army, state police, CRPF and BSF. The meeting decided to put the security agencies engaged in counter- insurgency operations on alert.

More than one hundred Adivasi people rushed to Guwahati on Wednesday to depose before the Justicer Manisana panel probing the Beltola incident but the chairman invited three of them to brief the infamous violence. Led by AASAA, these Adivasi people hold a rally in front of the Commission office demanding an impartial enquiry into the violence. Mostly, of them came from Kokrajhar, Udalguri and Nagrijuli. Six people died and 38 others have been injured at a road mishap which took place on late Tuesday morning in Numaligarh near Babathan. Eleven passengers were killed when a Guwahati-Silchar bus skidded off the road and fell into a over 100-metre-deep gorge near Mawryngkneng, about 40 km from Shillong, in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya on Wednesday morning. Congress is moving neck and neck with the opposition Asom Gana Parishad in the initial trend of the counting of votes that has begun in the morning on Monday.
