Press Meet on AFSPA

The story of the Armed Forces (Special Power) Act 1958, in North East India is nothing but a tale of endless brutality. It has left a legacy of fear which turns to hate and distrust of the security forces and the government of the day. Arbitrary killings, grave human rights abuses / violations including extra judicial execution, enforce disappearance, rape, torture, etc committed by the security force is not a new story to tell. People in north east have by victims of AFSPA.

The Jeevan Reddy Committee, the 2nd Administrative Reforms Committee, United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and the Committee on Economic , Social and Cultural Rights recommended to the Act but the Government still fails to implement it. The next session of CERD will be held from 27th July to 15th August 2008.

The North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) shall organize a press meet at the Guwahati Press on 23rd July at 2 PM. The press meet is being organized to highlight the latest happenings related to AFSPA in North East India.
