Jahar was thankful to the doctor because he got well very soon. Well, the doctor and others told him repeatedly to continue his medicine for six months but he was very confident that he had got rid of the monster disease. Jahar was very happy indeed. He was able to work. He felt fit and what else he needed? No way, he would not take the medicine any more. Why should he continue it even after feeling so much better? He stopped the medicine and resumed his age old habit of drinking country liquor. Why wouldn’t he? He could not even take the taste of it for last two and a half months while taking the medicines. But now nobody can stop him. He is fit and he would drink and eat to his heart’s...
“Amina was physically abused by her husband almost every day. The first few months after her marriage were not so difficult. She fell sick and gradually her health deteriorated. Her body battered by the illness and regular abuse could no longer withstand the hardship of doing the daily chores. She was too weak, too sick to do anything! She was coughing for weeks. One day, she saw blood coming out of her mouth with cough! She realized that something was very wrong with her body. She begged her husband, “Please do something! Take me to the hospital.” He hesitantly took her to the hospital. The doctor suggested the tests. After some days the results came and Amina was diagnosed with TB...
Ten years old Anima (name changed) entered hesitantly into the portico pushing the curtain aside. Her steps were unsure and she was looking indistinctly. She was wearing a pink frock flowing to her knees. Her oiled slick hair was tied neatly to her back in a thin pony tail. The frock was much bigger to the size of her lean body. She was so thin that any cloth would not have fitted her skeletal form. The neck of her oversized frock slung low revealing the chest bones and upper ribs clearly. Her skinny limbs and tired eyes misrepresented the picture of a child of her age who would have been otherwise chasing butterflies in the fields or in between the lines of tea bushes. How could they...
