Change in Act to safeguard immigrants!

The Centre is believed to have been clearing the decks to grant refugee status to the Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants. According to highly placed sources the home ministry is finetuning some changes in the vital clauses of the Indian Citizenship Act 1955 to enable these migrants to stay in the country. The entire task is expected to end before August 15. If the amended Act is cleared in Parliament the refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan would be able to stay in the state.

AASU is planning a massive movement across the state while Congress opposes the move to grant citizenship to these immigrants.

AAS leaders told Assam Times over telephone that they won’t allow it to happen. “We want the government to ensure that not even a single immigrant who came after March 24, 1971 allowed to stay. If the Narendra Modi Government refuses to halt, we have no option but to hit the streets,” said a senior AASU leader.

Talking to Assam Times, Assam Congress leaders said that the urgency is unwanted. “We don’t have anything to oppose the mover for refugee status. But we would oppose the citizenship move tooth and nail.”
